Sandy M’s review of Lifting the Veil by R.G. Alexander
Contemporary Paranormal Erotic Romance released by Ellora’s Cave 16 Apr 08
Give me a good shifter story any time. If it’s a wolf shifter story, it’s that much better. A sexy-as-sin, handsome, alpha, immortal shifter. What’s better than that?
It’s Meru’s birthday and she’s been given an unexpected gift, The Book of Veils. Not knowing what all the book contains, she translates a spell that gives her the ability to see what people truly are, seeing their aura, so to speak, lifting the veil. As she learns more about her ancestor, Aine, a Druid and favored by the goddess Danu, and the power of future sight she possessed, Meru realizes that power has been handed down to her for a reason she and her family must discover and then they must solve whatever comes from that discovery.
Sent to protect a priestess, Damon is a guardian of the North Portal, a place where it is his duty to keep dark shifters and Others from gaining entrance to the human world and causing havoc throughout. But when he meets this priestess, his wolf instincts take over and it’s his mate he’s confronted with, though he can’t reasonably acknowledge that particular piece of news right now. All he knows is he wants her, needs her, and will have her.
And have her he does. The lovemaking between these two is fierce and mind numbing as well as slow, savoring, and loving. They don’t fight the attraction, the pull they have for one another. They let it grow and explode naturally, all the while learning about each other and fighting evil and darkness. You feel the emotion between them, especially when Damon tells her about his childhood, how lost he was and frightened at not knowing how to control his shifting.
The storyline itself is done very well, giving you and the characters a mystery to solve together. And those secondary characters are all terrific. I especially enjoyed Finn and twins Val and Hawk, fellow guardians of Damon’s. I was hoping those two would have their own books, and perusing the author’s site I found that Val and Hawk’s story is in the works.
I look forward to that one. I also really enjoyed the mini romance between Lily, Meru’s aunt, and Myrddin, an ancient immortal entrusted to protect mortals. Maybe they will have their own book down the road too.
This is one of those books that gives you a storyline to go along with your sex and this author does it quite nicely while keeping you entertained and hot and bothered all at the same time.
Grade: B+
Summary:
When Meru Tanner receives a mysterious birthday present, The Book of Veils, her world is turned upside down. Now she’s “seeing” things that aren’t supposed to be real, gabbing with gods and having erotic premonitions about one sexy wolf-man she’d do anything to tame.
She tempted the feral beast inside him to come out and play. Damon Arkadios has kept the animal part of his nature leashed for thousands of years. He is a guardian, the leader of the Fianna warriors — but from the moment he caught her scent, he knew she was more than just another assignment. Protecting the sexy little seer will challenge his own beliefs — and his control.
Their lust quickly spins out of control, even as danger lurks behind every corner. Can she accept the legacy handed down to her from the distant past and convince her Lycan to be a part of her future? Or will the ancient evil that threatens to destroy their world keep them from making a new beginning together?
