Veena’s review of Never More (The Gray Court, Book 6) by Dana Marie Bell
Urban Fantasy published by Samhain Publishing Ltd. 26 May 15
This series is Mid Summer Night’s Dream a la Dana Marie Bell. From the beginning I lapped it up with all the wonderful tongue-in-cheek references and interesting twists and turns as the modern world meets the black, white, and gray fairy courts. The creatures that come out of Ms. Bell’s imagination are engagingly different from the run-of-the-mill paranormal creatures from other author’s pens. As we get deeper into the series, it continues to be interesting, but …
Raven is a very interesting character. His command of his ravens and the way he uses his gifts is superb. His back story has the right touch of pathos which makes him such an appealing character despite his so very urban façade.
The illusion spells are very interesting, as are some of the other new and old characters we meet in this story. Amanda is nothing remarkable or special, other than I guess she captures Raven’s heart. Supposedly we met her in the very first book, but she definitely did not leave an impression. Normally if I like a secondary character, I wait for their story, but since I couldn’t even recall Amanda’s role in any of the earlier stories, I guess she wasn’t interesting enough.
I feel that the author was searching for a heroine that she could place into her story and Amanda is convenient and believable. This book feels like a filler story with a plausible plot line to introduce a new cast of characters and relationships to drive the series forward.
I very much enjoyed Raven’s character and some of the tricks that he pulls throughout the story, so while it’s enjoyable it’s not as impressive as the earlier stories in the series. Definitely not squeeworthy.
Grade: B
Summary:
Love takes wing faster than a Raven in flight.
Amanda Pierson’s long-overdue holiday at the Dunne farm unexpectedly turns into a working vacation when she’s roped into throwing together a last-minute dream wedding for Michaela Exton and Robin Goodfellow. No biggie for one of the best party planners at Fantasy Events, Inc., right?
Right.
A monkey wrench lands with a thud when the groom’s son—who’s been watching her every move—declares they were meant to be together. Raven Goodfellow is everything she doesn’t want in a lover. Brash, bold and goth. Yet there’s something almost…magical about their attraction.
The moment Raven saw Amanda’s picture, he had suspicions. Now that he’s seen her in person, he’s certain. She is his truebond, though it will take a delicate, feather-light touch to bring her into his world.
Love takes wing faster than a bird in flight. But when the Dark Queen sends agents to destroy him, Raven finds himself in a desperate fight to protect all he holds dear…or the Dark Queen may succeed where so many others have failed.
