Kaitlyn‘s review of King of Battle and Blood (Adrian X Isolde, Book 1) by Scarlett St. Clair
Fantasy Romance published by Bloom Books 30 Nov 21

An arranged marriage, enemies to lovers, vampires, political intrigue, witches and monsters, what’s not to love?

Overall, I enjoyed this book, and it was really easy to binge in two sittings.

There are some FBAA vibes – Adrian and Isolde reminds me a lot of Casteel and Poppy.

At times it’s a little more smut than plot, but there is enough of the latter to keep me interested throughout. I think this is a lot better than A Touch of Darkness too.

Grade: B-

Summary:

Their union is his revenge.

Isolde de Lara considers her wedding day to be her death day. To end a years-long war, she is to marry vampire king Adrian Aleksandr Vasiliev, and kill him.

But her assassination attempt is thwarted, and Adrian threatens that if Isolde tries to kill him again, he will raise her as the undead. Faced with the possibility of becoming the thing she hates most, Isolde seeks other ways to defy him and survive the brutal vampire court.

Except it isn’t the court she fears most—it’s Adrian. Despite their undeniable chemistry, she wonders why the king—fierce, savage, merciless—chose her as consort.

The answer will shatter her world.

Queen of Myth and Monsters (Adrian X Isolde, Book 2)
Fantasy Romance published by Bloom Books 20 Dec 22

This second book took me a little longer to get through. It definitely dragged at times and I didn’t feel very invested.

Adrian and Isolde spend most of the book arguing, and the overall plot feels very neglected.

The ending is more focused on the plot, but I’m actually not really sure what happened. It’s confusing and ends very abruptly.

I am disappointed in this sequel, but I’m curious enough to want to read Book 3. I definitely need to see what happens next to Adrian and Isolde, given their current situation. 😅

Grade: C

Summary:

“I am of the House of Lara, daughter of Elvira of Nailani, sister of witches, and I have come to reclaim my crown.”

Isolde, newly coronated queen, has finally found a king worthy of her in the vampire Adrian. But their love for each other has cost Isolde her father and her homeland. With two opposing goddesses playing mortals and vampires against one another, Isolde is uncertain who her allies are in the vampire stronghold of Revekka.

Now, as politics in the Red Palace grow more underhanded, inexplicable monster attacks plague the villages, and a deadly crimson mist threatens all of Cordova, Isolde must trust in the bond she’s formed with Adrian, even as she learns troubling information about his complicated past.
