Veena’s review of Siren’s Song (The Gray Court, Book 5) by Dana Marie Bell
Fantasy Romance published by Samhain Publishing Ltd. 16 Sep 14
Oberon has always loomed larger than life in my mind, especially with all the connections to Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. I have always loved how Ms. Bell uses the connections between the various characters from Shakespeare’s play in her series. Much as I couldn’t wait to read this one, I have to reluctantly admit that there aren’t a lot of teeth in this story, nor a whole lot of excitement as it unfolds.
Cassie is in hiding with Robin while Oberon is in denial about the possibility of a true bond with her. However, as foretold by Shane Jolun, an attack on the Faerie king leaves him without his memories and open to a rescue by Cassie, giving her the opportunity to forge a connection.
We get to meet all the characters we’ve been introduced so far in the series, as well as the merfolk, since Cassie is a siren princess. Sadly, there are no new species or other mix between species that we can sink our teeth into. In many ways the story is quite predictable without a lot of surprises.
Grade: C
Summary:
A crescendo of evil could destroy their perfect harmony.
Oberon is well and truly lost, with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or where he’s going. One woman makes his palms sweat and his heart race, a woman with turquoise eyes and a beautiful voice. Instinct tells him she’s the only one who can save him.
Cassie knows the truth—he is the High King, her truebond, the one man born to be hers and hers alone. Restoring his memory and keeping him out of the Black Court’s clutches is her mission, though success means losing him. Yet to give the world back its High King, she will make that sacrifice.
As soon as Oberon’s memory comes crashing back through his mind’s closed door, he makes one vow. Though beset by enemies, chased and attacked, he will return to his rightful place with his Queen by his side.
Except when he makes good on his vow, all hell breaks loose. And when Cassie’s life is threatened, the fae world will bow before the High King or pay the price in blood.
I think my favorite from this series is The Hob.
I definitely agree.
