Veena’s review of Against The Sky (The Brodies of Alaska, Book 2) by Kat Martin
Romantic Suspense published by Zebra 27 Jan 15
I’ve crossed multiple state lines adventuring with these series over many years and definitely look forward to a thrilling ride with a new strong and silent super sleuth every six months or so. We are now in Alaska with Nick Brodie, who is burnt out from his job solving true and very dreadful crimes. The book gets off to a great start when he heads of to Las Vegas for some much needed R&R and rescues Sam from the overamorous overtures of a hotel guest. Not only do the usual thrills and chills take a while to materialize, but the path to true romance is definitely choppy…
Nick is a great character, though he definitely has his friends and his enemies, especially some of his fellow police officers from his stint in homicide (I think!). He’s looking for a change when he runs into Sam in Las Vegas, but even he doesn’t anticipate where his future is headed when he and Sam quickly get hot and steamy between the sheets.
Despite what they say, what stays in Vegas can’t be contained and the action moves to Alaska when Sam comes out to visit with Nick for a vacation with a hidden agenda. I have to say that she is quite disappointing, other than her cooking, which is A-class in how much she dislikes the great outdoors and the cold. I do like how she dives in and uses her internet skills to get Nick and his neighbor some data that he might never have found on his own.
All is definitely not well in Nick’s corner of Alaska, even though he’s in denial. The adventure portion of the story takes a while to warm up and come into full bloom, but the path is so convoluted and confusing that I didn’t quite enjoy it as I normally do.
For me this book isn’t as great as some of the others, but the next one, from all accounts, sounds to be a scorcher with lots of action. I can hardly wait.
Grade: B-
