This historical with mild paranormal elements was originally released by Howell’s alterego, Anna Jennet, in Nov 1995. For a peak at the original cover, just run your mouse over the cover to the left. I’m a huge Howell fan, so you know I just had to read this. Am I sad I did? No, but let’s just say it wasn’t on the same level of Beauty and the Beast.

This may be a bit shocking, so brace yourself. This is the first ever Jo Goodman review where I am not going to gush. Not that I didn’t like it. It just wasn’t what I have come to expect when I pick up a Goodman book. I’m not disillusioned. Not yet anyway. I figure every author deserves a second chance. Or a third. Or a fourth. It’s such a treat to find a book that has the true flavor, the real feel of cowboys, their lives and surroundings. Cordell Tanner, the hero of this book, walks, talks, and acts just like a man of the west should, as do all the other characters he deals with throughout the story.
Of course, the exception to that is Trixie, an English transplant who has fallen in love with her home in Kansas and resorts to a little deceit to make sure she keeps it, and a few of her relatives who figure significantly in the storyline later in the book. You’d think they’d be like fish out of water, but they actually take to the ranching life quite easily.

She vexes him constantly and at the same time tames him with her love, while he shows her that not all is fair in war, but honor and loyalty are what make a man.
