Veena’s review of Everlasting Enchantment (Relics of Merlin, Book 4)by Kathryne Kennedy
Fantasy Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 03 Dec 13
This book is set in a fantastical Victorian era where the country is peopled with shapeshifters and mages. Millicent Pantere is a black panther who has spent her entire life underground. She is coerced into playing the role of a noble lady and joining the Queen’s court in search of a magical relic that enhances the use of magic. Little does she know that she’ll locate the relic and an unforgettable man who was a captive of that relic and who will capture her heart. While there are some wonderful cameos scattered through the book, the story fails to hold me in thrall as I had expected it would.
Gareth Solimere is a knight of the round table. He was enslaved by Merlin himself in a jewel encrusted bangle for the folly of trying to flirt with Merlin’s great love. Centuries have passed and every day the bangle seeks a new arm and Gareth provides an unforgettable night to the lady who’s arm it graces until morning comes and he’s imprisoned back into its confines.
Finally he finds himself on Millicent’s arm and this time it seems as though his heart is captured. She’s not seeking the physical fulfillment that he normally provides, nor is she looking for love. She only wants the relic to exchange it for her friend who has been imprisoned by an evil duke as hostage to Millicent’s performance.
The evil duke is plotting to hold the Queen herself hostage with his magical tricks. Gareth and Millicent, along with the common people that she’s friends with, all rally together to save the Queen at the risk of their own personal safety. The story to a large extent is very predictable, though I think the crowning glory is actually toward the end with the household brownies.
I have enjoyed other books by Ms. Kennedy, but I don’t think this series is for me.
POWERFUL MAGIC IS AFOOT
Millicent Pantere has lived her entire life in the notorious London Underground. She cares nothing for the problems of the crown or the intrigues of society. But the ladies of the realm are acting strangely, and Millicent is coerced into tracking down the rumors of a mysterious man–a magic man who comes in the night and disappears at dawn.
AND SO THE HUNT BEGINS
Millicent’s search leads her to one of Merlin’s legendary relics and the seductive knight whose fate is bound up with it. Centuries ago, Sir Gareth Solimere made the mistake of seducing the wrong woman, and he has been trapped ever since by a diabolical curse. He’s looking for the one who can break the enchantment–but in this world of magic and mayhem, love is always stronger than it seems…
