Bare DevotionSandy M’s review of Bare Devotion (Bare Love, Book 4) by Lacey Thorn
Paranormal Romantic Suspense published by Ellora’s Cave 1 Feb 08

I always enjoy a book so much more when an author has that way pulling me in and compelling me to like something I usually don’t care for in a book. Menage has never been one of my favorite things in a read, with a few exceptions here and there. Lacey Thorn writes some pretty hot threesomes and by the time I get those scenes, I’m as involved there as much as I am in the rest of the book.

Of course, being invested in the characters is what makes that so easy and Ms. Thorn does a great job of giving us characters we care about, characters we laugh with, mourn with, cry with, and love with. This series is about the Daniels family and with this book we not only still follow a Daniels’ romance but we also jump into the lives of friends of the Danielses’, and the entire family is still fully involved in the story. This is a family that knows how to love and play and they protect each other quite fiercely.

Catherine Daniels is the matriarch of the family. Having lost her husband two years prior, she’s been seeing Roman secretly, not wanting her children to know their mother is interested in a man after the loss of their father. Roman, however, is tired of the hiding, the secretiveness of their relationship and he’s about to force Rin to make one of the hardest decisions of her life: him or her children. After showing her what she’d be missing if he weren’t in her life anymore, he’s on his way out of town for a bit to let her stew and hope she’ll choose him.

Rin does want Roman in her life. She feels alive again, living for herself instead of her kids. And he’s taught her so much in the bedroom, showing her there’s spice in sex instead of vanilla all the time. But making the decision he wants is something she’s not sure she can do, not sure she wants to do. I really liked this couple. They’re older, have more in life to lose but also more in life to enjoy after living the sum of their experiences. The way Catherine is forced to choose will break your heart.

Knowing what it’s like to lose someone you love to a serial killer, Ally has come to Legacy to find The Messenger,” the man responsible for the fiery death of her mother and her mother’s significant other. She has the gift of seeing into the killer’s mind, through his eyes and she’s determined to put a stop to his reign of terror before he can hurt anyone else. She didn’t count on running into Blake, the local fire marshall, at the burnt-out home of the killer’s last victims. She has an instant attraction to him and suddenly he’s the only one who can truly comfort her with his belief in her and her ability.

He doesn’t judge her, just loves her and introduces her to an exciting world of lovemaking and the family that welcomes her with open arms. This couple was quite enjoyable too. They don’t pussyfoot around when they decide they want each other. They don’t judge each other and they embrace wholeheartedly what each brings to the relationship. Blake’s best friend, Shep, who definitely has a story of his own, enjoys a tryst or two with them but he wants for himself what Ally and Blake have found. He’ll still enjoy what they have to offer in the meantime, though. I like a man who can still have fun with the joys in life despite his circumstances!

I was yanked into this book immediately. The prologue pulls no punches and tells you what you’re in for for the duration. Then we meet all those family members one by one and you’re wrapped up nice and tight into their lives before you know it. There wasn’t one character I didn’t like. They’re all fun-loving and devoted to each other and they know how to have a great time. All of that mixed into the mystery of finding a psycho killer before he kills again and time with running out has you on the edge of your seat with your heart pumping at full capacity when everything is blown wide open.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So much so that I’m going to be reading the first three books in the series as soon as I can. I want to meet all those great characters in their own special way.
