Kaitlyn‘s review of Slaying the Vampire Conqueror by Carissa Broadbent
Fantasy Romance published by Carissa Broadbent 27 Apr 23
I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews for this one. Most of the complaints were that it felt rushed, the magic system was confusing, and the chemistry between the MCs could have been better. I kind of agree with all of that, but at the same time enjoyed this. I do wish the magic system had been a little less complicated, and I would have liked a little more slow-burn tension, but Carissa Broadbent is a powerhouse writer who always keeps me entertained.
It is really cool getting to see another side to the House of Blood and learn more about one of the other gods. This isn’t my favorite book of hers, but I’m still a Carissa Broadbent super fan.
This book can be read as a standalone. It takes place in the same world as The Serpent and the Wings of Night books but is in a completely different area with a secluded cast and contains zero spoilers for the series. The author has mentioned the characters will make an appearance in later Crowns of Nyaxia books.
Overall entertaining, but if you’re just starting your Carissa journey, I’d recommend beginning with The Serpent and the Wings of Night or Daughter of No Worlds. Those books are phenomenal and some of the best I’ve ever read!

Sylina has sacrificed everything for her goddess–her soul, her freedom, her eyes. Life in service to the Arachessen, a cult of the Goddess of Fate, has turned Sylina from orphaned street-rat to disciplined killer, determined to overthrow Glaea’s tyrannical king.
But when a brutal vampire conqueror arrives on their shores, Sylina faces an even deadlier adversary. She’s tasked with a crucial mission: infiltrate his army, earn his trust… and kill him.
Atrius is a terrifying warrior carving an unstoppable path through Glaea. Yet when Sylina becomes his seer, she glimpses a dark and shocking past–and a side of him that reminds her far too much of parts of herself she’d rather forget.
Sylina’s orders are clear. The conqueror cannot live. But as the blood spilled by Glaea’s tyrant king runs thicker, her connection with Atrius only grows stronger. A connection forbidden by her vows. A connection that could cost her everything.
