Sammy’s review of Vengeance Road (Torpedo Ink, Book 2) by Christine Feehan
Paranormal Romance published by Berkley 29 Jan 19]
I feel like you find out pretty quickly what this book is going to be about two chapters in. The two tropes moving this book are not my favorite. I guess if anyone would get me to read these, it would be Christine Feehan. I can’t really review this book without disclosing the tropes. If you want to read this book without knowing, now’s the time to do so. Otherwise, I am going to talk about the highs and lows of the dreaded tropes. This book was a solid second book into this series and I truly look forward to reading each and every member of this complicated motorcycle club/family. It’s the characters who drive these books- their emotional scars, the physical ones, their huge hearts, the way they love, the way they have each others’ backs. It’s definitely about their HEAs, but it’s also about love of family.
In a previous book, Torpedo Ink infiltrated a very bad motorcycle club to take down their president. That club was into trafficking, guns, and drugs. It’s here that Breezy Simmons meets Steele. Steele is the No. 2 man in that club. Breezy and Steele hooked up and had a hot, passionate relationship. Torpedo Ink takes out the president, takes their money and flees. This includes Steele getting rid of Breezy. Breezy was deep in love with Steele and Steele with her, but without Steele being an idiot, we would not have trope number one: Second Chances. Not my favorite.
Breezy left and hid off the grid after shit went down. Thanks to Steele, he taught her how to stay hidden. While Breezy is in hiding, Steele has been looking for her. He knows that she’s the one for him and he done screwed up. In the meantime, Breezy comes looking for Steele because her world just got turned upside down. She walks into the club to deliver a letter and finds him naked with a few girls. She’s absolutely disgusted and she runs out, with Steele and Torpedo Ink on her heels. Steele will not let her get away.
Turns out Breezy was pregnant – trope No. 2. I am not a fan of the secret baby trope. Not. At. All. In this case it didn’t completely annoy me. Steele is stunned when he finds out, and what makes it worse is that Breezy’s disgusting father and brother took the baby hostage until she brings Steele and Torpedo Ink to him. Now, if you read Book 1, you would know the club is very good at retrieving people from horrible situations. Steele convinces Breezy to stay with him and that him and his brothers and sisters will get their baby back. While they are preparing to do that, Breezy and Steele have to face the past and what happened.
Breezy wants nothing to do with any motorcycle club. The life she had was cruel. She was abused, raped, morally and physically. I want to tell you, Christine Feehan is very sensitive with this material. It’s not gratuitous, but it is their backgrounds. They all suffer from PTSD. Certain things will trigger them. The stories in this series is how they persevere in the face of the violence inflicted on them. It makes for a very emotional read, but with that comes the rewards. Breezy and Steele are combustive together and Steele definitely has his kinks.
The book builds towards getting back their child. There is torture in the book. Things are not rosy. They get back Zane and try to carve out a new normal. While their story progresses, there are other things going on. There is another biker gang out there, just like Torpedo Ink, looking to band together with them. There’s also the hunt for the young boy who’s being sold at an auction online. Things are heating up in Torpedo Ink and I can’t wait to see who is up next. The books are emotionally hard, they are also extremely hot, but they always leave you very satisfied. The characters are a different kind of warrior. They are survivors of a situation they had no choice in. They are a family that they chose to be. They love hard and fight for people who can’t. I really love this world Feehan has introduced to us. I hope you love it as much as I do.
Happy Reading!
Summary:
Breezy Simmons was born into a ruthless motorcycle club—and now that she’s out, she’s never going to be that girl again. But when her past catches up with her, Breezy must go to Sea Haven to seek out the man who almost destroyed her. The man who chose his club over her and left her feeling used and alone.
As vice president of Torpedo Ink, Steele is ride or die for the brothers he lived through hell with. He never thought he’d find something as pure as his feelings for Breezy, or that keeping her safe would mean driving her away with cruel words that turned her love for him to ash.
Now, Steele won’t let her walk away twice. He’ll do whatever it takes to make Breezy his woman again—especially when he learns the real reason she came to him for help, and that the stakes are higher than he ever could have imagined. . .
