Book CoverSandy M’s review of Talking to the Dead (FBI Psychics, Book 5) by Shiloh Walker
Paranormal Romantic Suspense novella published by Amazon Digital Services 16 June 17

I absolutely love Shiloh Walker’s stories. Have I said that before in my reviews? Probably. And I’ll more than likely say it again and again, because she’s one of the very best when it comes to so-very-likable and sympathetic characters and story lines that grip you from the first sentence and won’t let you go until all is said and done. Especially in this FBI Psychics series. Each book is unique and full of the paranormal, which is nearly my favorite subgenre.

Michael O’Rourke has decided he needs a break after so many difficult cases. As luck would have it, however, he gets pulled in to help a sexy sheriff of a town that has a haunted maisma wrapped all around it.

We learn early that Michael sees and hears the dead. It’s like he inherited the ability from his older brother, who always protected him and died doing so twenty years before. Looking for some peace, he lands in small-town America and immediately knows something is wrong, the dead lined up ready to receive the help only he can give. But the local sheriff, Daisy Crandall, has a serial killer on the loose and suddenly there’s a new man in town. Maybe she’s finally cracked this case wide open.

Only she discovers quite quickly she can use the kind of help Michael has to offer, after she clears him with his boss, of course. Despite knowing it’s not proper, there is an attraction between them they can’t keep at bay. Things move pretty quickly for them personally too. I really like the way Ms. Walker pulls a reader into her characters’ lives so effortlessly. Michael still sees and talks to his brother, their good rapport and love still in evidence with each appearance Lucas makes.

The villain is another special scumbag from Ms. Walker’s terrific imagination. You know the kind, so evil you can’t wait for their end, whether by gun, knife, or cement shoes. Doesn’t matter, as your glee rushes out of you. Michael and Daisy work diligently together to figure out this sicko before he can get to his next victim.

Of course, this novella is much too short for me. I always want more of Shiloh Walker. Her writing is top-notch, as usual. I never, ever miss one of her releases, and I have her entire backlist to eventually get through. Lots of romance heaven in my future.

Summary:

Surrounded by death, a man with a terrible gift reaches for life.

A horrific tragedy blasted open a door in young Michael O’Rourke’s mind—cursing him with the ability to talk with the Dead. Nearly two decades later, Michael has moved from victim to survivor, using his abilities to seek out those who would go unjudged.

With his gift, he talks to those who’ve died violently and seeks out their killers. Only once he’s found the murderer, can the victims be at rest. After his last case, the only thing he wants is peace and he hopes to find it in the small town of Mitchell, Indiana.

But something is horribly wrong—the dead are waiting for him there, as well.

Small town sheriff Daisy Crandall is frustrated. The murder investigation she’s leading is going nowhere, the few leads she’s had haven’t panned out. She needs a break—this case is personal and when a stranger arrives, turning up where he shouldn’t be, she’s suspicious. Finding out that he is more than what he appears to be should shock her but doesn’t. The fact she’s highly attracted to him at the worst possible time is a hindrance.

Unfortunately, teaming up with Michael is the only way.

Now it’s a race against time before the killer destroys the life of his next victim…
