This is a delightful collection of stories featuring some of the characters that we’ve met through the pages of the series. Through their back stories we get a deeper insight into family and pack structures in this Psy/Changeling world which the author has created. If you’ve never read this series before, then this is definitely not the place to start.
In one of the more recent stories we heard about the relationship between the arrow Stefan and his human mate on the deep sea station. I wondered if I had missed this pairing but wonder no more. Echo of Silence in this collection tells you their story way before the fall of silence when Stefan was committed to maintaining the façade of silence and hiding his relationship with the attractive human engineer.
My personal favorite is Dezi’s and Felix’s story in Partners in Persuasion. The Dark River soldier is often mentioned, particularly in relationship to her delightful mother who treats this bad-ass soldier like her cub. Felix is a Snow Dancer wolf and submissive. I love their courtship, particularly the emotional impact of Felix as he gets over his fear of his dominant mate and courts her with gifts and sparkles. Delightful!
We all know something is brewing between Garnet and Kenji, two of Hawke’s lieutenants. The author takes us backstage into their life, starting out from when they were best friends and seriously courting to a complete break in their friendship into present day. Set against a background of a psychotic murder in Garnet’s den and a snow storm, Kenji finally has the chance to work through his childhood angst and re-create the magic of love.
Dorian gives readers a deeper insight into Dorian’s life as a latent leopard which he overcame to become one of the leopard sentinels. Given the gift of his leopard, thanks to his mate’s work with DNA, we get a fun look at the antics of the other sentinels as they break in and accept the leopard into their tight bonds of friendship.
All in all, a great collection of short snippets to keep readers engaged while awaiting a new book in the series.
