I’ve never read Eve Silver’s books before, but I plunged into this one, despite it being part of a series. I had no trouble at all.
This is the kind of paranormal I enjoy—rich language and delicious characters I can believe in. It’s a classic Romeo and Juliet trope, their parents or bosses or whatever, are enemies, so they are expected to be enemies, too. Despite the deep attraction they feel for each other.
When I started this book, I was dreading getting another galley that I couldn’t get into, but two chapters in and I was totally engrossed. The mythology is one I particularly enjoy, the Egyptian one. This is signaled by the quotations from the Egyptian Book of the Dead that starts every chapter. About as understandable as the Book of Revelations, but with beautiful, mystical language you just know has to mean something.
Malthus Krayl (Mal) is after the same object as Calliope Kane (Calli) when they first meet and although he ends up the victor, she has wounded him and taken his blood. I loved Calli. While she didn’t take any bs from anyone, she knew when she’d met someone who could best her, and she acts accordingly. She has a mission and she does her best to fulfill it.
Mal wants the same thing and he knows he’ll get it, but Calli gets under his skin, literally, when she takes a draught of his blood. His protective instincts kick in. But his conflict is dire, since it involves his brother, who he is trying to resurrect. He is a powerful being, but he has his limits, and Calli pushes him close.
There was a part, about half way through the book when I thought, “oh no, not more torture,” because Mal is really put through it and all the slicing and burning and torture gets a little bit much, and, dare I say, even repetitive, but the tide turns and Mal goes on the rampage. Loved that. Loved what happened when he and Calli get together, although the sexual content of this book is pretty minimal. But it does its job, and I enjoyed that part, too.
I will be looking for more of Silver’s books, for sure.
