I have very mixed feelings about this book. I’m a fan of the romantic suspense and this book definitely delivers on this, along with a nice second chance at love for two young lovers. It’s the secret and lies that are revealed almost like multiple sub-plots that made my head reel and my heart hurt that gave me a hard time.
Sean and Jessica were high school sweethearts growing up in a small town in California, until it all fell apart. Sean went away to school and eventually became a detective with the LAPD, and Jessica made an unhappy marriage which left her with a delightful daughter and a life she’s trying to rebuild, when circumstances bring the two together again on a deserted street in their hometown. Jessica’s mother has disappeared, apparently abandoning her car in the middle of a small country road not far from their home. If things are not bad enough Jessica’s ex-husband shows up on the scene, armed with a gun and determined to win custody of their daughter.
Sean does what he does best. He safeguards Jessica and her daughter in the apartment where he is currently staying, while trying to find the clues behind her mother’s disappearance, as well Jessica’s ex-husband’s sudden interest in their little girl. His investigation reveals a lot of truths that have been hidden, including the lies that separated Jessica and himself. As the story evolves, many difficult truths are revealed, which involve child pornography and abuse, which may be triggers for some people.
The story is well paced and the suspense is managed really well. I did have to remind myself that this is a romance and romances always have happy endings several times during the story, though the big reveal left me reeling a bit.
When her mother disappears, Jessica Hargrove’s life begins to unravel. And her problems are only just beginning. A horrible secret has been revealed, threatening to destroy three generations of her family, and the one person who may be able to help her is the man she’s never stopped loving, the man who once broke her heart….
LAPD Detective Sean Burke is back in his small hometown, pondering if his career in the big city is what he really wants anymore. As painful as it is to see Jess again, she needs him. He can’t walk away when she’s about to lose everything she holds dear. But will what he discovers ruin their second chance at love?
