Book CoverVeena’s review of Wake A Sleeping Tiger (Breeds, Book 30) by Lora Leigh
Paranormal Fantasy Romance published by Berkley 21 Mar 17

Cullen’s long recessed breed senses awaken when Chelsea gives him her resignation.  A kiss activates the mating hormone sealing their fate.  Why are his breed genetics finely coming to life after so many years? His brother Gideon, the mad scientist, has a theory.

I like that this book actually has a story that goes beyond a mating kiss followed by lots of hot and horizontal action, which becomes a bit repetitive in the telling when you are so many books deep in the series.

Don’t get me wrong. For those readers who find these sexual encounters hot and erotic, there’s plenty of that to go around, along with the fast-paced action that characterizes this story.  As we know, each couple has their own path to walk on their mating journey, and this one is definitely different, given that Cullen was once married to Chelsea’s cousin.

Chelsea did not sign up to work for the Navajo Nation covert enforcement agency to file papers in an office. When Cullen absolutely refuses to let her out in the field, she quits and goes to work for the Bureau of Breed Affairs. Losing Chelsea’s calming presence in his office agitates Cullen’s tiger. While he doesn’t yet know how to use his animal senses to the fullest, his desire to claim and protect Chelsea start to unravel the lockdown he has on his animal instincts.  It doesn’t help that Chelsea has no thought about her own safety and is plunging headlong into danger.

Now that the mating instinct and mating heat has been triggered, Cullen can’t leave Chelsea alone.  Determined to protect her, he makes a bit of a pest of himself in full protective mode, hampering her abilities to get her job done. Chelsea, however, is in the trigger hairs of a killer. Who is trying to do their level best to have her killed and why?   The truth that emerges is a pretty chilling, but the author saves the best for last and leaves her readers on quite a cliffhanger.  It’s good to catch up with Gideon and his mate, along with Cassie, whom we haven’t met for a while, and Anya, the fun-loving coyote female who gives Chelsea dating advice.

Given the cliffhanger ending and Cassie’s active role as a secondary character in this story, I hope Ms. Feehan is finally getting ready to share Cassie’s story with her readers.  Can’t wait for that one.

Grade: B

Summary:

When readers of dark romance and unbridled desire want to be satisfied, they turn to #1 New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh and her “powerful and highly erotic” (Fresh Fiction) Breed novels. Now a Breed hides in the world of man—until a woman arouses the amused and wildly carnal animal within…

Once, he was Judd—Bengal Breed and brother to the notorious fugitive Gideon.
After Gideon disappeared, Judd was experimented on until his tortured body knew nothing but agony.

Now he is Cullen Maverick, serving as the commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Agency in the small community of Window Rock, Arizona. Despite his genetics, Cullen is able to pass as human because his Bengal traits are recessed. He lacks the ability to smell the emotions, bonds and fears that other Breeds take for granted. And he remains tormented that he wasn’t able to mate the woman he loved—at the cost of her life.

He’s no longer a Breed, merely a man. . . or so he thinks. But his tiger is about to be awakened by the one woman destined to be his—Chelsea Martinez. And their world will never be the same…
