Book CoverVeena’s review of Going Deep (Alpha Ops, Book 5) by Anne Calhoun
Romantic Suspense published by St. Martins Paperbacks 01 Nov 16

Ms. Calhoun is slowly becoming a new favorite go-to author for me. She’s a great story teller who has the ability to suck her readers into the lives of her characters and bringing to light the good, bad, and ugly in relationships.  The mystery and suspense is the cherry on top of a great story.

Cady Ward has returned home for the holidays after a grueling concert series. Unfortunately, thanks to an unknown fan stalker, her manager insists on a bodyguard: hunky police officer Conn McCormick.  From the first the two have insane chemistry, even though the last thing Cady wants is a full-time bodyguard to disrupt her holidays, while Conn is definitely not happy to be sidelined from his regular police job to bodyguard duty.

Cady is so open and honest that she wants no-holds-barred sex with Conn after having suppressed her sexuality on tour.  Her frank and open discussion with Conn about her needs is eye opening. Poor Conn is still imagining how he’s going to have to deal with guarding her while she’s flirting with someone else, when she takes matters in hand and solves his dilemma.   I really do like these strong women characters who know what they want and go after it.

While they indulge and play at happy families, her stalker is raising the ante by stealing her lucky charm bracelet and her song book where she’s recorded her efforts at composing new material for her upcoming album.  In parallel, Conn is also pursuing his own investigation into who might be framing him and why, as well as trying to figure out who’s brazen enough to get into Cady’s home and steal from right under their noses.

Another important thread in the story is the racing. Conn takes Cady to the track to help her blow off cobwebs, only to find out what a speed fiend she really is.  I like how the author builds all these different elements into her story bringing her characters alive for her readers.

Ms. Calhoun does a masterful job of bringing all the threads together for an excellent finish.  I’m intrigued to see where she’ll go next and with which character, but for sure I want to see what comes of Conn’s new undercover assignment.

Grade: B

Summary:

SHE’LL ROCK HIS WORLD
After weeks on a sold-out tour, singer Cady Ward is coming home for the holidays. But after one too many episodes of fan-craziness, Cady’s manager decides that she needs protection―in the form of muscled cop Conn McCormick. Longing for peace and quiet to prepare before her next album drops, Cady doesn’t need a bodyguard just to deal with some vague email threats…though she can’t deny that close proximity to Conn’s body is a very nice place to be.
Conn is in the midst of a career scandal when his boss assigns him to pop-star guard duty. It’s a poor use of his skills, even though Cady’s feisty nature proves the perfect distraction for Conn while Internal Affairs investigates his case. What begins as a sizzling attraction becomes something deeper than either Conn or Cady could have expected. But when Conn uncovers the sinister plan behind the threats to Cady, he’s faced with a professional dilemma: To save her life, will he risk having a future with the only woman who’s ever touched his soul?
