Sandy M’s review of Hang Tough (Blacktop Cowboys, Book 8) by Lorelei James
Contemporary Western Erotic Romance published by Berkley 1 Nov 16
As usual, Lorelei James pulls me into a story that I never thought I would like as much as I always do when I get to the last page. Not that I won’t like any of her books at all, but sometimes there’s a character here and there who surprises me when they get their own book. Tobin Hale is that character in this series. Don’t get me wrong, he was likable, was friends with everyone, a hard worker – you get the drift – in the previous books, but he never crossed my radar as an upcoming sexy hero.
Of course, getting to know him in his own book is a whole different story. However, besides his sexiness, his ripped and toned body, his bit of dominance in the bedroom, what I love about Tobin the most is he’s just your average Joe nice guy. Of course, that’s also one of the reasons Jade eventually falls for him just like I did.
We almost lose Tobin, though, when he decides to send his resume out across the country to find a job that will utilize his education and talents. And hopefully put him smack dab in front of the woman of his dreams. Aside from his job at Split Rock Ranch not panning out after so many years, he’s a bit tired of everyone around him finding love and he’s left in their dust. As he’s waiting for any response to his professional queries, Mz. Garnet requires his help to keep her family at bay from packing her up and sending her to a senior home. So he moves into her house in case either her son or a moving company arrives at the front door.
Much to his surprise, it’s Garnet’s granddaughter, Jade, who hits the front porch. Jade is in fighting mode, ready to take on anyone who’s taking advantage of her grandmother. Seems there’s this hick cowboy who’s ingratiated himself in Grandma Garnet’s home and Jade’s having none of it. And the sparks do fly when these two meet. Right off the bat they’re at each other’s throats, making accusations and throwing insults. Garnet sets rules to keep them out of each other’s company. But guess what? Yep, doesn’t work one bit!
Of course, they eventually call a truce and that’s the beginning of the good times to be had between them. They have to contend with the Mud Lilies, Garnet’s group of feisty senior friends, and the sudden responses to Tobin’s job applications. Jade is a city girl, will she be able to adapt in Wyoming? Is Tobin ready to take a step back from his dream job and stay in Muddy Gap? The attraction between them is combustible, and I like that they don’t wait forever to declare their feelings. It’s lightning fast to build up, but they go with it and know they’ve found what they’re looking for in each other.
I absolutely love reading Lorelei James. I lose myself in the story. I laugh. I cry. I fan myself constantly. And I have fun. Especially when I least expect it.
Summary:
When Tobin Hale stepped in to stop Garnet Evans’s son from railroading her out of her own home, he knew moving in with his favorite Mud Lily could be seen as strange. But nothing prepared him for the arrival of Garnet’s fiery, beautiful granddaughter, Jade—or her assumption that he’s up to no good…
While Tobin might be the hottest man Jade Evans has ever seen, his physical attributes won’t distract her from protecting her grandma from his sweet-talking ways. But the stubborn cowboy digs in his boot heels and refuses to leave. Stuck in close quarters together, Jade learns Tobin is the real deal—a hardworking, fiercely loyal man and she’s the one in danger of losing her heart.
And just when he was prepared to leave Muddy Gap behind, Tobin may have found the kind of woman worth sticking around for…
