Book CoverVeena’s review of Kept (The Enforcers, Book 3) by Maya Banks
Erotic Romance published by Berkley 25 Oct 16

Book 3 in the Enforcers series is very similar in theme and plot to the earlier two books. This time it’s Silas, Drake’s right-hand man, who takes one look at the sweet, innocent, down-on-her-luck Hayley through a security camera and succumbs. Soon Silas has her safely ensconced in an apartment carved out of his own spacious abode, content to watch over her from a distance, soothed by her exquisite violin playing that calms all his cares away.   Will Silas go the way of Drake and let her become his vulnerability in the dangerous world they live in?
Silas might have been content to live his life in the shadows lusting over Hayley, but when she’s attacked and almost raped on her way home, Silas sweeps in, moves her into his apartment, and takes over her life, body, heart, and mind under his own control. Hayley gives him her innocence and submission over a series of hot erotic nights and days.  There are some very sweet bonding moments between Hayley and his fellow enforcers, whom he calls brothers, as they help him protect and keep Hayley safe.

Silas lives in a violent world, and it’s inevitable that sooner or later Hayley will be caught in the cross fire. Frightened for her safety, Silas forgets every lesson he had once preached to Drake and uses cruelty to drive a wedge between himself and Hayley.  Clearly, if history stays true, he’ll definitely have to grovel to get back into Hayley’s good graces.  Hopefully he’ll come to his senses before it’s too late.

The Enforcers are dark, tortured men who need extreme control in their lives to survive. Yet these sweet, virginal heroines seem to be able to burrow through their outer shell to find the marshmallow hearts they keep hidden.  This is a somewhat predictable story following a very similar plot line as the earlier two books in the series but with a few interesting twists and turns to keep the reader interested.

Grade: C+

Summary:

From the author of Mastered and Dominated comes the third of the Enforcers novels. Kept is the searing story of a woman who finds sanctuary in surrender…

He can’t change who he is.

A horrific childhood has made Silas the man he is today: dangerous, distrustful and demanding. He’s lived in self-imposed solitude, convinced that no woman could ever accept his need for absolute control—in business and pleasure. That is, until a young violinist walks into one of his buildings and into his life.

She can’t change what she wants.

Hayley has been struggling to fulfill her father’s dying wish: for her to attend a prestigious music school in New York City. But even working multiple jobs, she can’t afford the tiniest of apartments. Seeing her hopeless and near tears, Silas vows to help and protect her, no matter the cost to himself. But when Hayley meets his every demand with unwavering acceptance and love, he is overwhelmed by her goodness and gentle spirit. He knows that the dark stain on his soul can never be erased—and rather than risk destroying the most beautiful person he’s ever experienced, he’ll have to do the hardest thing he’s ever had to do. Let her go. But he’s totally unprepared for the lengths to which Hayley will go to fight for his love and for a future brighter than the sun…
