Veena’s review of Wolf Trouble (SWAT, Book 2) by Paige Tyler
Urban Fantasy published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 04 Aug 15

I thought I was an expert on wolfology until I read Ms. Tyler’s SWAT series. Apparently we all have the wolf gene and under extreme conditions we could turn into a werewolf.  I have visions of werewolves multiplying and running around the world, given all the doom and gloom that I hear on the news.  This is a great series so far with a lot of hunkalicious men whose ranks have now been invaded by the first woman. Gage, from Book 1, found his One in the human ranks, but could Khaki be THE ONE  for one of the men on the team or will she just slow her team down? Being a woman, I love how she shows them up, especially the yoga session where she gets them to twist like pretzels.

Khaki Blake knew something fundamental had changed within her physiology when she stopped to rescue a woman on the brink of death in a terrible neighborhood and received no backup, despite multiple calls to her station. It wasn’t until the commander of the Dallas SWAT team came calling with an invitation to join his team as its token woman member that she discovered that she was no longer “human,” even though she knew nothing of being a wolf.

Xander Briggs definitely dioes not believe in the myth about “the ONE,” regardless of what Gage has to say about it, but the smell of the newest team member gets to him such that he’s unable to sleep or function effectively.  I love how competitive Khai is, and, despite her diminutive size, she shows the men how well she can compete with them. Xander’s reaction, when he finds out how she navigated the dark room exercise, sure makes up for any angst he gave her before.  I like how despite all her own mixed feelings and trepidation she goes to him and he patiently walks her through the meditative stance necessary to discover and bring her inner wolf out.

The story is fast paced as the team quickly assimilates its newest member and gives due respect that she earns. It’s exciting to be a part of the team as they chase bad guys and rescue a little girl, using Khaki’s special nose to find and locate her in the face of personal danger. As Khaki settles down to life in Dallas with her new friends, the past that she thought she left behind comes calling and brings an extra edge of danger into her and Xander’s life. It’s fun to see Xander and Khaki trying to hide their relationship from their team. All those extra showers and special lotions and talk about doing laundry together, not.

I can’t wait to see who falls next and what their story will be. With all those hunkalacious men, it will be interesting and fun to see where the author’s imagination will take us next.

Grade: A

Summary:

He’s in trouble with a capital T
There’s never been a female on the Dallas SWAT team and Senior Corporal Xander Riggs prefers it that way. The elite pack of alpha male wolfshifters is no place for a woman. But Khaki Blake is no ordinary woman.

When Khaki walks through the door attractive as hell and smelling like heaven, Xander doesn’t know what the heck to do. Worse, she’s put under his command and Xander’s protective instincts go on high alert. When things start heating up both on and off the clock, it’s almost impossible to keep their heads in the game and their hands off each other…
