Veena’s review of Never Surrender (Shadow Warriors, Book 6) by Lindsay McKenna
Contemporary Romance published by HQN 24 Jun 14
Ms. McKenna paints what I believe is a very realistic picture of the ongoing war in Afghanistan and the day-to-day dangers that our troops face. This is the sequel to the original story where Gabe and Bay fell in love. Now Gabe is assigned stateside, while Bay is deployed back to Afghanistan. Thousands of miles away, Gabe continues to monitor Bay’s safety, along with his SEAL brothers who deployed in her vicinity. Yet all the vigilance is not enough to keep Bay safe from the long reach of the Taliban. This sequel to their story is torturous dark and not for the faint of heart.
Gabe and Bay have almost a psychic connection between them. Right at the time Bay is kidnapped, he wakes up from a deep sleep with a strong premonition that is confirmed via the phone call he receives. He pulls all the strings necessary to get him to the war front and mount up a rescue. The horrific story of her captivity and the treatment of prisoners and local children by the Taliban is very graphic and shook me to my depth.
Can Bay recover from the horrors and find the same beauty in Gabe’s love for her that she had enjoyed before? This is the story of her journey to recovery. Her courage in the face of adversity. In many ways it’s Gabe’s journey as well. Much as he would like to protect her in cotton wool and keep her safe in the protection of his embrace, he has to let go so she can stand on her own and make her way back to him and to their love.
This is a very powerful story. I have enjoyed other books in the series, but none of them are as compelling with the level of intensity of this one. I will caution again that there are parts of the book that make difficult reading.
Grade: B
Summary:
From Shadow Warrior…to hostage
Despite her sweet nature, Navy medic Bay Thorn’s will is unbreakable. It has earned her not only the respect of her team, but also the love of Navy SEAL Gabe Griffin. And as soon as she wraps up the final six months of Operation Shadow Warriors in Afghanistan, she’ll have her happily ever after….
Until her deployment goes horribly wrong.
Bay’s medical expertise is needed by the Taliban, and she is taken hostage. Her captor is ruthless and cruel, and Bay isn’t exempt from his evil intents. All that’s left now is her resolve and the too-distant memory of Gabe—her last and only hope for rescue. And to pull Bay from hell, this SEAL will have to break every rule in the book. But will Gabe find the woman he loves…or a woman broken beyond recognition?
