Veena’s review of Hunt the Darkness (Guardians of Eternity, Book 11) by Alexandra Ivy
Paranormal Romance published by Zebra 27 May 14
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and gasped along with other readers as the story has built to a crescendo in the midst of meeting some very enjoyable paranormal characters. All the couples on the side of good stood together and faced down the evil that threatened the very fabric of our world and kept the evil at bay. While this book has its share of action adventure and a very likable couple, it lacks the driving intensity and momentum of the previous books.
Sally Grace is a witch. She ended up on the wrong side in service to the Dark Lord himself. Now that he’s defeated, she’s a bit rudderless and ends up in a prison at the Vampire leader’s headquarters. Assigned as her personal guard is clan chief Roke, but something goes wrong and Sally lashes out at Roke, accidentally creating a mate bond between them. She has no clue how to undo this, so she sets off with Roke in hot pursuit in search of clues that her mother might have left with regard to the identity of her father, who might be able to help.
Roke is very dedicated to his clan and has sacrificed much for his current position as clan chief. The last thing he needs is this mating and Sally is far from his ideal mate. However, much as he tries to resist her, she calls out to some deep, hidden part of him. When they finally catch up to each other, they also locate a mysterious box that seems to call to Sally in a strange way, but they are unable to decipher the strange glyphs carved on its surface.
Also it is clear that something or someone is hunting them. After they barely escape from their last encounter, which leaves Sally’s house razed to the ground, they know they need answers fast. Of course, in the midst of all of this is the blazing chemistry between them. Even if it means that sex will cement the bond into a permanent one, Roke is unable to resist her.
Roke is a great hero. He might be a bit rough around the edges, but he’s a very nurturing and caring guy. I like how he is willing to tone down his alpha-ness to give his mate what she needs in order to gain control. Sally is a gutsy witch. Despite the fact that she had been on the side of evil, she is committed to doing good in how she saves the imprisoned Fae, when everyone else is asking her to save herself and leave them to their fate.
While the book is somewhat predictable, it has some great moments. There is an interesting new species of demon that we get to meet, but, overall, I feel like this is a filler and the author is staging a new story arc. I’m just curious where this series will go next.
Grade: C
Summary:
The vampire Roke is raw, sensual, always in control. Yet somehow he’s allowed the unthinkable to happen: a nymph-like witch named Sally has used her magic to trick Roke into mating with her. The pair will remain bound for eternity unless Sally breaks the spell. The trouble is, she has no idea how. . .
Mating with Roke was an accident; at least that’s what Sally keeps telling herself. She’s on the hunt for her demon father, whose identity holds the key to releasing the spell. The search won’t be easy with Roke shadowing Sally’s every move. As they mate with a ferocity that leaves them both aching for more, Sally isn’t sure if her world is more dangerous without Roke or with him. . .
