Veena’s review of Sheikhs Scandal (The Chatsfield, Book 1) by Lucy Monroe
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin Presents 15 Apr 14

This book kicks off a multi-author series featuring the Chatsfields. Aaliyah Amari is the illegitimate daughter of Gene Chatsfield. With her mother’s death she wants to find a way to connect with her father, so she takes up the position of a chambermaid at his flagship hotel in London. The Chatsfield London is going to open their doors to a lot more than her father for Liyah Amari.

On her first day she finds that the hotel is getting ready to host the illustrious Sheikh bin Falah el Zeena from her mother’s homeland of Zeena Sahra. Her knowledge of the customs of her mother’s homeland quickly help her gain not just the attention of the head of housekeeping of the hotel but the sheikh and key members of his entourage as well.

And then one night they both cross the boundaries that separate a hotel employee from a prestigious guest. She’s heartbroken! He’s furious! They need each other to find relief. Her face-to-face first meeting with her father ends in disaster and she goes out looking for a drink. Jilted by his fiancée on the eve of their return home and their marriage, he seeks liquid relief in his ex-fiancée’s hotel room. A couple of drinks lead to a short walk to the bedroom and the possibility of a royal heir out of wedlock since she’s a virgin and he, of course, doesn’t remember any protection. Well, there’s no help but to take her discretely back to his homeland until he can safely cross out the possibility of a baby.

The sheikh seems to be a bit of prick in the way he imposes his will on Liyah, though I will admit he does redeem himself as the story moves on, particularly toward the end. I love how his mother stands up for Liyah and brings her into the family fold.  Ms. Monroe has done a great job in highlighting the double standard and restrictions that women have to put up with in certain parts of the world. I certainly hope that shining a light on these things will go a long way toward helping change things and make the world a better place for women.

Grade: B
