Veena’s review of Lethal Pursuit (Bagram Special Ops Series, Book 3) by Kaylea Cross
Romantic Suspense published by Carina Press 16 Sep 13

This books hits a bit close to home as I think about our troops stationed at enemy lines and the dangers that they face on a day-to-day basis. The scenario is realistic and possible, but the resulting book is dark and hard to take in places.

Maya Lopez has served multiple tours of duty. She is a loner, a woman in a man’s world, well-respected for her skills and ability. She’s always had a soft corner for PJ Jackson, but there’s no future between them, because as attracted as Maya is to him, she doesn’t do long term and he’s the forever kind of guy.

Then the unthinkable happens and both are taken prisoners by a Taliban psychopathic militant during a visit by the secretary of defense to the front lines. The three are held in deplorable conditions and tortured. The ensuing torture is a bit hard for me as a casual reader, but as I cringed at what they faced, I cheered their heroism. Clearly the circumstances lead to all three of them forging strong relationships.

Let me tell you, there is nothing romantic during this dark period. It is both gritty and real and I kept wanting to skip over the hard parts, even though they do truly add to the story. I feel an increased respect and kinship with the characters and, by extension, to the troops who serve and face danger every day.

I have read all the other books in this series, and I will state that this is the darkest one yet.

Grade:B

Summary:

Security Forces Lieutenant Maya Lopez is right at home in a war zone: she’s been fighting all her life. A hard-won commission in the air force has brought her to Afghanistan, and if she plays her cards right, she could end up with an FBI job. It won’t be easy, but that just makes her more determined.

Jackson Thatcher is a protector in all senses of the word. A pararescue jumper with Southern-boy charm, he easily captures Maya’s interest, but her trust is another story. He’s sexy, strong and caring, but she makes it clear she’s no damsel in distress. She’s never relied on any man, and she’s not about to start now.

When Maya and Jackson become pawns in a radical warlord’s deadly game, they find themselves on the run and must depend on each other if they want to make it out alive.
