Book CoverVeena’s review of Sometimes a Rogue (Lost Lords, Book 5) by Mary Jo Putney
Historical Romance published by Zebra 27 Aug 13

The very proper Lady Sarah Townsend Clark is a tomboy at heart. A bruising rider and an excellent shot, she yearns for adventure – which finds her unexpectedly one morning when she stands in for her very pregnant twin. Kidnapped by a rough, uncouth group of men, she’s whisked out of England. Hot to trot on the rescue is charming Bow Street Runner Rob Carmichael. A lady of noble birth in compromising circumstances with a gentleman makes the end a forgone conclusion, but what makes the book really worth it is the journey that gets us there.

Sarah is a heroine after my heart. She craves adventure and when she gets the wrong kind, she doesn’t buckle under and give up. She constantly tests her situation looking for an escape. When Rob Carmichael shows up to the rescue, she actively participates with him and pulls her own weight – and even his on a couple of occasions.

Rob appeals to me on so many levels. His protectiveness toward Sarah, his acceptance of his daughter when she is sprung on him totally unawares, his handling of his grandmother and all the people on his estate, he is constantly putting other people ahead of himself, and he’s always so grateful for how Sarah takes care of him in little ways, smoothing his path.

They are a great couple and all the secondary characters really complement them well and contribute to the overall enjoyment of the story. There is enough intrigue and action to keep me involved with the story. Here I was thinking that I’m tired of historical romances ,but this delightful story has gotten me back in the groove again.

I think some of this series has been a hit or miss for me so far, but I am intrigued enough to go through the backlist and find the ones that I missed, especially since I read that Rob is featured in all of them.

Grade: B
