Gwen’s review of Desire Untamed (Feral Warriors, Book 1) by Pamela Palmer
Contemporary paranormal romance released by Avon 30 Jun 09
I must have “Will read paranormal romance series for food” stamped across my forehead. It seems like that’s all I ever read any more. Well here’s another new series – is it good, is it bad, is it another notch in my reading bedpost? Read on to find out…
Palmer has created a new and rather unique mythos with this book. We have hawt shapeshifters who are battling the forces of evil while falling in love/lust with beautiful women. Okay. So that’s not so unique. What is unique, however, are the details behind how the shifters shift, the villains, and behind this heroine’s role in their world. Plus the bad guys are very creepy and seemingly impossible to defend against.
What I was disappointed about this novel – and frankly I don’t know how an author of a unique, new paranormal series can defend against it – is the amount of creative real estate spent on building this unique, new world. There is very little room for anything else in this book but the world building. This leaves me hope that the next entry in the series is better than this entry was for me.
No. I didn’t particularly care for the heroine. She is more than a little selfish on several occasions and I didn’t like the way she treated her mom. Perhaps there were reasons for this, but I still thought it was immature and selfish and her behavior really stuck with me. I liked the hero, but wish he had been more confident and that he’d thrown the heroine over for someone more deserving. Like me. (Did I say that out loud?)
I didn’t hate this book. I felt it was a bit above average and that it shows promise for the other entries – as long as we can get to the meat of the relationship quickly, that is.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes shapeshifter stories or looking to start a new paranormal series. Just stay off my side of the panhandling street.

Can I have a flamingo cook? I will refrain from mentioning what I thought of this book. I laughed at points where I don’t think was the intent of the author, until I reached page 50 and placed it to the side.
Why refrain? You are allowed to disagree honest it won’t hurt her feelings.
I think it is amusing so many people are so quite to jump on omg she is copying Ward. I haven’t read it so I can’t say but I remember many saying ward was copying kenyon/feehan even brockmann which I thought was odd until now as I read her backlist and I see so much of the BDB in her troubleshooter series.
::shrug::
It was interesting, but not terribly so. Be interesting to read the others books, though.
