Review: Witch in the House by Jenna McKnight

Azteclady’s review of Witch in the House by Jenna McKnight
Paranormal Romance released by Avon 25 Sep 07
This is the first book by Ms McKnight that I’ve read, and I was rather pleasantly surprised by the humor in it. Still, I don’t think I’m quite the audience for romantic comedies (I’m a bit of a curmudgeon—really, I am—and romantic comedies often leave me cold). And yet, this novel made me smile repeatedly.

Holy smokes! This was a really fun book! Paranormal, regency historical, action, romance, time-travel. All of it between just two covers. It was like going to a really good Chinese buffet where you can eat anything you want.

There were a few things I liked about this book, but more I didn’t like or simply felt ambivalent about. Not a promising way to start a review, I realize, but bear with me while I explain what struck me - perhaps they’ll be things you like about a book. Me? Not so much.
Gak. I wrote the review and realized there was more I didn’t like about this story than I liked. So read on if you dare.
Besides. I figure if I didn’t get some reviews in soon, Sybil was going to take away my Duckie Club card.

Gotta say, I really enjoy a good Americana setting every once in awhile. Small towns where everyone’s in each other’s business, and no one ever forgets a thing. I’m coming out of historical burnout, and have been on the lookout for unusual settings to help me out of that slump. So when Jewel came up for grabs, I was all over it. A nineteenth century American setting? That’s not a Western? Yes! While not a perfect book, Jewel has plenty to interest those who enjoy American historicals or different settings in general.

One of the hardest to find books in romance, Winter Garden, now has a sequel. Though I do know someone who has a copy *coughSybilcough* I have yet to read it. If it is ever reprinted, it is one of the books I will buy and read. This book does stand on its own though, reading Winter Garden is not required to understand this book.

Review: Never Trust a Scoundrel by Gayle Callen

Lawson’s review of Never Trust a Scoundrel by Gayle Callen
Historical romance released by Avon 25 Mar 08
Gayle Callen starts a new series with this book, though it is loosely tied to her last series. Simon Wade, the hero from Viscount in the Bedroom, makes an appearance, along with his fiancee Louisa Shelby. From what I think I remember of that book, Daniel Throckmorton made an appearance, though I’m a little fuzzy on the details, it was quite a bit and a lot of books ago. The setup for Scoundrel seems a bit complicated and Callen usually is able to deliver a good romance. Read more

Alicia’s Lightning Reviews of The Wallflower Series by Lisa Kleypas
Historical romance series released by Avon from Nov 04 thru Jul 06
In February I read the entire Wallflower series by Lisa Kleypas. I am so glad I did. I had gotten bogged down after reading a couple of blah books. When I found myself folding laundry to put off picking up the book I was reading, I knew I needed to read a Kleypas or two. Or four. Here are four short reviews of the four books in the Wallflower series…

Lawson’s Review of The Perfect Wife by Victoria Alexander
Historical romance reprinted by Avon 26 Feb 08 by Avon (Original Dorchester release Nov ‘96)
There’s been a bit of a stir by some people about this book. Yes, it is a reprint. This could be a big deal to some and not to others, but after reading this book I don’t really see what all the excitement is about. But then, I didn’t see what all the excitement was about with Chase’s Lord of Scoundrels either. Maybe it’s just me, but I know when both of these books were originally printed I was generally reading only Julie Garwood (many many times) or Kathleen Woodiwiss (many many times). So what is up with this one? Well . .

Lawson’s review of The Kiss by Sophia Nash
Historical romance released by Avon 26 Feb 08
The title of this story is meant to reference the sculpture by Rodin, at least according to the back copy of the ARC. Like the famous embrace, The Kiss promises a healthy dose of passion, intrigue and scandal. While the statue gives those things in spades, Nash’s story leaves something to be desired. Read more
