What is the power of three?
I am talking threesomes. And the growth the trend seems to be finding in romance land. There isn’t a week that goes by without seeing a new one.
They are often the most rec’ed, talked about and seem to be one of the elements you will find most often on coming soon lists (that and bondage but that is another post).
I emailed a few people. Authors, some who have and some who haven’t, written novels with three people in love and lust. Readers who always have a nifty take on things. And had planned on emailing a few print and ‘e’ editors but that took longer to gather than I thought. So we shall see *g*.
I will open up some threads today for links, rec’s and list (oh my fave!) and I will have the post that started it all. As well as some guest posts by some really nifty authors. (will be on going over the next week or so)
Oh since it just doesn’t seem to be a completely post without a question *g*. Here is one I asked a few people (if you have answered in email… you don’t need to answer here)
1. Why do you think threesomes are ‘hot’ in romanceland? Do you see this as a trend that will be around a while or burn out quickly.
Trend? What trend?
Like someone commented over at JMC’s, I don’t “do” eBooks – so I tend to be out of the loop on some of this stuff. The only author that pops into my mind as writing threesomes is Emma Holly – and I think she handles those scenes well.
I’ll state it again, I think erotica works best when it challenges the reader’s notions of what is sexy, what is hot, and what is erotic. While the reader might think “ewww, I’d never do that in real life” that doesn’t mean the reader is incapable of enjoying reading about it 😉 Or for that matter, the reader might be able to fantasize about it. Just because “we” wouldn’t do something in real life, doesn’t mean the idea doesn’t appeal. Normal people tend to have inhibitions, whereas in something like fiction, characters are often not confined to the real world….
Any of this make sense of do I need more caffeine?
Wow don’t think I could have said it any better than Wendy.
I’ve read a few Ellora’s Cave books that had threesomes in it – Lora Leigh being the author I can recall at the moment. They were okay – didn’t add TONS to the book, but also didn’t detract much. Seemed like another way to differentiate from the piles of others out there (so to speak 😉 .
I gotta tell ya – the ONE thing I had a tough time wrapping my brain around was visualizing all the arms and legs, and where they were at any one time during the sex scenes. It’s kind of like trying to count the arms and legs on the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington (a.k.a. the Iwo Jima Memorial). Urban legend is there is one more leg than there are men in the statue. I have the same kind of mental “optical illusion” when I read these threesome scenes.
I don’t really ‘do’ ebooks either so I haven’t come across this really. The only one I’ve read that has it is All U Can Eat. As to why it’s so popular (although I didn’t know that *g*) I guess like Wendy said, it’s a fantasy that I don’t imagine that many of us have tried.
