Review: Playing with Fire by Katie MacAlister

July 18, 2008

book coverDevon's Review of Playing with Fire (Silver Dragons, Book 1) by Katie MacAlister
Paranormal Romance released by Signet 6 May 2008

Katie MacAlister's books are a mixed bag for me. I haven't enjoyed her contemporaries, but I quite liked several of her paranormals. I enjoy her sense of humor, but after awhile the books in the ongoing series start to suffer from a certain sameness and forced hijinks. Holy Smokes, the fourth book in the Aisling Grey series (see my review, and please excuse the formatting issues), definitely felt like an ending. There were a number of loose ends and so, despite my disenchantment with the series, I was sufficiently intrigued to pick up Playing with Fire. This book features Gabriel Tauhou, the wyvern of the silver dragons and an appealing character in the Aisling Grey books. Read more

REVIEW: Warrior by Angela Knight

July 15, 2008

Book CoverGwen's review of Warrior (Time Hunters, Book 1) by Angela Knight
Sci-Fi romance released by Berkley 1 Jul 08

Angela Knight writes some of the steamiest, far-out books I've ever read. They almost always have uber-alpha heroes and generally have strong heroines. Warrior is no exception. It has an alpha hero in spades, a heroine that rocked, and some sci-fi details that even Shannon will like. Read more

Review: Seaside Cinderella by Anna Schmidt

July 5, 2008

book coverDevon’s review of Seaside Cinderella by Anna Schmidt
Inspirational Historical Romance released by Steeple Hill Love Inspired 1 Jul 08

I’ve never read an inspirational romance before. I’ve always viewed them rather suspiciously, not because I have any issue with Christianity or Christian literature, but because I’ve read some inspirational children’s literature that was very poorly written. Especially in comparison to some of the well-written classics of children’s literature authored by Christians, which contain overt Christian themes. So I imagined that inspirational romance would sacrifice plot and character development in favor of didactic, awkwardly placed sermonizing. But I had to read Seaside Cinderella because of the setting: turn of the century New England. I was thrilled to see a romance featuring an Irish factory worker and a factory owner. It was time to get over my prejudices and try something new. Read more

REVIEW: Fallen by Erin McCarthy

July 4, 2008

book coverLimecello's review of Fallen (7 Deadly Sins, Book 2) by Erin McCarthy
Paranormal Romance released by Berkley Jove 29 Apr 08

Erin McCarthy is one of my favorite romance authors. My expectations may have been too high, because Book 2 of the Seven Deadly Sins series unfortunately disappointed. I felt that the story didn’t truly begin until chapter 9. The story moved too slowly for me, and I felt that the action didn't begin until the nearly the end, and it became rushed. I also would have liked a bit more romance. Read more

Review: The Dangerous Mr. Ryder by Louise Allen

June 30, 2008

The Dangerous Mr. Ryder by Louise AllenDevon’s review of The Dangerous Mr. Ryder by Louise Allen
Historical Romance released 1 July 2008 by Harlequin Historical

The Dangerous Mr. Ryder, the first book in Louise Allen’s Those Scandalous Ravenhursts series, features that most popular of Regency heroes, the gentleman adventurer-spy. Jack Ryder, aka Lord Sebastian Ravenhurst, has been charged to bring Eva, the Grand Duchess of Maubourg, to England. The tiny duchy of Maubourg is significant to both the French and the English in terms of location and allegiance. Eva is proud, intelligent, and independent, as well as beautiful. As they make their dangerous journey, the two find themselves falling in love. While several elements of this book seem rather familiar, it was a solidly entertaining read.
