REVIEW: Darkbeast Rebellion by Morgan Keyes

Book CoverStevie‘s review of Darkbeast Rebellion (Darkbeast, Book 2) by Morgan Keyes
Middle Grade fantasy published by Margaret K. McElderry Books 24 Sep 13

Having utterly loved the first book in this series, I deliberately didn’t reread it before picking this one up, in order to have a clear picture of how well the second stands alone. My advice: read the first book before moving on to this one, but read them both. Just don’t expect a romance – although the main character is growing up and has two very different boys paying her attention in the course of their adventures together.

EXCERPT: Need to Know by HelenKay Dimon

Book CoverYou’ll want to get yourself a copy of this book. Pure fun and inventiveness with a hero and heroine who revel in both of those elements.

I enjoy reading an author who writes outside the box for her readers as well as herself, and HelenKay Dimon does that in spades. If I lived in a big, powerful city like Jordan does, I think I’d try to be the first to bring her Need to Know web site to fruition in the real world.

So take a few minutes to read this teaser. I think you’ll hop on over to Amazon as soon as you’ve read the last word!

Summary:

Welcome to Need to Know—Because a Woman Can’t Be Too Informed

Dating in D.C. is like navigating an apocalyptic wasteland populated by men in expensive suits with zero mating potential. Need to Know provides all the information a savvy single woman like you needs to avoid dating disasters.

By night, Jordan McAdam is the proprietor of a popular website that rates D.C.’s hottest bachelors—everything from how quick they email you back to their skills in the sack. She’s been burned once too often to accept any man at face value. By day, her job as an office temp puts her in the perfect position to do a little fact-checking on her rich and powerful subjects. When her latest assignment brings her face-to-face with the sexy but mysterious Forest Redder, Jordan decides to do a little “hands on” research of her own. To Jordan, he seems like the perfect man—but she knows there is no such thing. Moreover, there’s a big problem: Forest knows Jordan’s the woman behind the scandalous site—and Jordan knows he knows. Will he expose her secret—or find his own posted on Need to Know?

REVIEW: My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster

Book Cover

Veena’s review of My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster
Steampunk Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 01 Oct 13

I jumped into the middle of an ongoing series with this book and felt right at home with nary a thought about what had gone before this point. I feel like the story is a clever satire with a tongue-in-cheek description of “blood-sucking” bluebloods and primogeniture that allowed the oldest son to become a blue blood, with the second sons and by-blows becoming nighthawks (or watchman) and royal guards. The crowning glory is the love triangle where the two women are really one woman in different guises. I find this genre fascinating because essentially it provides a blank canvas for an author to create their own new, creative reality without having to worry about historical accuracy and other mundane details.

REVIEW: Undressed by Avery Aster

Book CoverStevie‘s review of Undressed (The Manhattanites, Book 1) by Avery Aster
Contemporary erotic romance published by Ellora’s Cave 15 Feb 13

I was offered this book after agreeing to review the second in the series, which has an intriguing blurb. Not being keen on starting series in the middle, I decided to read this one first, even though the blurb doesn’t exactly thrill me. As it turns out, the story as described in the blurb isn’t that bad; however, the book as a whole feels as if two separate genres have been cut and pasted into one narrative: one a romance with an annoying hero and heroine but reasonably well set down, and the other something that reads like badly scripted, late 20th-century porn-film dialogue.

REVIEW: Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives: Stories from the Trailblazers of Domestic Suspense by Sarah Weinman

Book Cover

Veena’s review of Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives: Stories from the Trailblazers of Domestic Suspense by Sarah Weinman
Mystery, Thriller and Suspense published by Penguin 27 Aug 13

I expected dark and twisted, especially since twisted is a part of the title, but this collection of short stories totally blew me away and I do mean that in a very mixed sense. Some of the stories are spine-tingling psychological thrillers of the caliber of Alfred Hitchcock and yet others left a sad after-taste. read more…

REVIEW: The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas

The Burning SkyLiviania’s review of The Burning Sky (The Elemental Trilogy, Book 1) by Sherry Thomas
Young adult historical fantasy published by Balzer + Bray 17 Sept 13

I was quite excited when I learned Sherry Thomas had a YA fantasy novel coming out.  She’s a wonderful romance writer, and one of her greatest strengths has always been her descriptive, flowing prose.  I could see how her style would fit well into a fantasy world, although I wasn’t so sure about a Thomas book without a romance.  Thankfully, The Burning Sky adds magic without dispensing with the romance.
