I like that this book actually has a story that goes beyond a mating kiss followed by lots of hot and horizontal action, which becomes a bit repetitive in the telling when you are so many books deep in the series.

I’ve let a couple of other series by Maya Banks go in the past year too. My hope that the old Maya I have so enjoyed over the years will make a comeback has finally been squashed.

While I’ve visited the ruins at Knossos and have a healthy fascination with the legend of the Minotaur, I don’t know as much about the history of ancient Crete as perhaps I should. Not, it seems, that anyone else knows as much about the Minoans as they do about the more dominant cultures of that region and time period, thus leaving plenty of gaps for authors to fill with fascinating speculation. More to the point of this review, having complained recently that I don’t see enough historical romances with gender-fluid or genderqueer characters, a whole spate come along at once, not least this offering by Alex Beecroft.

Anthologies and book bundles are a great way to test out new authors, as well as trying out genres that don’t usually appeal, and when a donation to charity is involved it seems pointless to only buy and read the parts of a collection that particularly appeal. Thus it was that I found myself reading a vampire menage by an author I’d not encountered before, as the shortest story in a bundle of three festive reads from Riptide. What could possibly go wrong?
