Veena’s review of The Nature of Secrets (Finley O’Sullivan, Book 2) by Debra Webb
Romantic Suspense published by Thomas and Mercer 14 Mar 23

With her husband’s death and betrayal, Finley lost everything. She now works for her uncle as an investigator, and her latest case comes really close to home in more ways than one.  Get ready for a roller coaster ride of secrets, lies, and betrayals.

A man is murdered after he and his wife had words about his embezzling money from her. It seems that’s not his only crime – he was also having an extramarital affair. Is this a crime of passion that is being covered up by hiring one of the best defense attorneys in town? Of course, the wife, a prominent businesswoman, pleads innocent, but the more Finley investigates, the more it becomes likely that their client might, in fact, be guilty of murder. In the course of her investigation, Finley also uncovers her own family secrets and more information about her own murdered husband.

The story is well told with a new twist around every corner that will keep readers panting to keep up. The suspense is masterful, and the truth will floor you.

Excellent story, I highly recommend it.

Grade: A

Summary:

Legal investigator Finley O’Sullivan has had a difficult year in the wake of her husband’s murder. But in her line of work, there’s no time to grieve. Her job is to protect the firm’s clients and defend their innocence through grueling investigative work.

Ellen Winthrop is a force to be reckoned with in the financial world. In a male-dominated industry, she shattered the glass ceiling by empowering and promoting women. But now her husband is dead, killed in the Winthrop family home—and she stands accused of his murder.

Finley, as the investigator at the firm Ellen Winthrop hired to defend her, has a clear objective: prove that Ellen didn’t do it. But the deeper Finley digs into the Winthrops’ marriage, the more she starts to doubt Ellen’s story. The uncomfortable truth is that Ellen Winthrop may in fact have killed her husband.

And he might not have been the first.
