Book CoverSandy M’s review of A First-Foot for Lady Jane by Jennifer Ashley
Historical Holiday Romance novella published by JA/AG Publishing 12 Nov 19

Yes, I’m a bit behind in writing this review for a holiday romance. Because Jennifer Ashley has given readers such a lovely, sweet story, I wanted to share it with you. Though it takes place during Hogmany, I would recommend reading it any time at all.

Lady Jane Randolph has an understanding with Major John Bennett – a childhood friend and neighbor – they will marry whenever the time is right. Then her Grandfather MacDonald predicts this year’s first-footer at Hogmany will be Jane’s future. She’ll be quite happy with John when the time comes, but you know very early there really are no romantic feelings whatsoever between them.

Then when Hogmany arrives and Spencer Ingram walks over the threshold into her home, Jane is taken unaware, her heart beating faster and her breath catching. As she gets to know this handsome and intriguing newcomer, Jane begins to see everything she thought she knew and wanted is nothing like what she’s beginning to feel and want.

All of these characters are charming and fun, even the staid Major Bennett. Grandfather MacDonald almost steals the show every time, but I so enjoyed the scenes with Spencer and Jane as they at first fight their attraction and then realize that will never work and then begin step by step to take their future into their own hands.

I hope you will pick this one up, despite the fact the holiday season is over. Heart-warming fun and romance is the name of the game any time of the year.

Grade: B

Summary:

When Grandfather MacDonald predicts Lady Jane will marry this year’s First-Footer—the first guest into the house on Hogmanay—she dismisses the notion. Her childhood sweetheart is fighting on the Peninsula, and she can’t imagine marrying anyone but the staid Major Barnett.

But when the clock strikes midnight, and Hogmanay begins, a knock at the front door changes Jane’s life forever.
