Kristie J’s review of Dirty (Dive Bar, Book 1) by Kylie Scott
Contemporary Romance published by St. Martin’s Griffin 9 Apr 16
I sometimes amuse myself with the depth of my shallowness – something that makes no sense on the surface, but that’s what it is. I started this book a while ago but wasn’t in the mood and was doing a lot of book jumping. That happens sometimes. Instead of a bouncing leg thing, I get a bouncing brain. I knew it was me and not the book. Then not long ago I saw the cover for the third book, and let’s just say I found the cover model mighty fine to look at. I realized I’d started the first book but didn’t get far and decided to give it another go, before getting to the third book with the long-haired cover model. See? Shallow.
So I went back and started where I left off with this book. The heroine, Lydia Green, was just about to get married to one of the town’s wealthiest when someone sent her a video of her fiancé in a very compromising position with the best man. She leaves out the back door still dressed in her wedding finery and jumps into the shower of a nearby house she breaks into, while trying to avoid being caught ditching her society wedding. When the owner, Vaughn Hewson, shows up, about to hop into the shower himself, well, he’s quite astonished at what he finds waiting for him. Hilarity ensues when the fiancé shows up.
Vaughn had been in a rock band that disbanded and had come back to his hometown to regroup and arrange to sell the family home. He invites Lydia to stay with him, since she’s left with pretty much nothing. He starts taking shifts at The Dive, the restaurant/bar that his sister has part ownership in, and eventually so does Lydia. They banter, they are attracted to each other, but Vaughn is in town for only a short time. He plans on getting a new band and continue on with his musical career.
This book is light and cute and fun and I had a good time reading it. I’ve been reading some more serious type books and by throwing in a nice, fun book, my reading is more balanced. So if you want to balance your reading and include more delightful and light, this is a good one to go for.
Summary:
The last thing Vaughan Hewson expects to find when he returns to his childhood home is a broken hearted bride in his shower, let alone the drama and chaos that come with her.
Lydia Green doesn’t know whether to scream or cry in a corner. Discovering the love of your life is having an affair on your wedding day is bad enough. Finding out it’s with his best man is another thing all together.
Just when this runaway bride has nowhere left to turn, a handsome stranger offers her a broad, muscular shoulder to cry on. Vaughan is the exact opposite of the picture perfect, respected businessmen she’s normally drawn to. This former musician-turned-bartender is rough around the edges and is facing his own crossroads. But Lydia’s already tried Mr. Right and discovered he’s all wrong–maybe it’s time to give Mr. Right Now a chance.
After all, what’s wrong with getting dirty?
