After I started this book, I noticed I had a couple of Ms. Towle’s other books; but as I haven’t read them, she’s a new-to-me author. Before I go further, I’m glad I have a couple of her other stories. That means the following review will be a good one.
Zeus, our hero, and Cameron, the heroine, were sweethearts in college. Though they seemed to be miles apart in professions, she a dancer and he a boxer, still they worked quite well as a couple and were very much in love. Then for no real explanation Zeus called things off, which devastated Cameron. She tried to move on but was never really able to get over him.
It’s now a number of years later. Zeus is carrying the weight of the real damage he caused an opponent in the ring, and while he’s still boxing, the joy is gone. And Cameron didn’t become the classical dancer she was hoping she would. This reminded me a bit of the Harry Chapin song Taxi, an older song from my generation about life not living up to expectations we had when we were young.
They run into each other, and just as Cameron has never gotten over Zeus, he has never gotten over her and he wants them to have a second chance. Despite not being able to really move on, she’s compared every guy since then to Zeus, so she’s very reluctant. As he never explained why he ended it the first time, she’s not sure she wants to face the possible heartache again.
I read this book some time ago and I’m late to getting to the writing of the review part, so while minute details are gone, I still have the ‘feeling’ of the book. And the feeling is good. While I thought his name is rather silly and I don’t get the joy of fighting, I thought Zeus was great. Yes, he made a mistake, but he’s paid for it for years and it wasn’t all his doing I loved how he handled the guy he injured and that shows he has a great deal of compassion. And I know I liked Cameron quite a bit too, though she doesn’t stand out quite as much as Zeus as a character.
This is the first book in a new series and I plan on keeping up with it, as well as moving the Samantha Towel books I already own up much higher on the ole TBR pile.
