Book CoverSandy M’s review of The Enforcer (Games People Play, Book 2) by HelenKay Dimon
Contemporary Romance published by Avon 25 May 17

I am having such fun with these heroes in HelenKay Dimon’s latest series, Games People Play. Yes, the heroines too, because it takes special women to deal with and handle these men who have their worlds turned upside down when love pops them a good one.

We meet Kayla first when she’s living with her best friends. One night as she showering, she’s totally oblivious to the massacre that is happening downstairs in their home. She’s a suspect, of course, in the murders, but when she’s finally cleared, she disappears and has stayed one step ahead of those who believe she’s guilty and the murderer who knows she escaped his wrath.

After moving from town to town for so many years, Kayla has finally found a form of peace in a small seaside village. She has a best friend again, enjoys her job, and for the most part feels safe. That is until a couple of suits show up in her diner, stealing glances her way, and just in general looking out of place. She’s learned to spot law enforcement types with no problem. Unfortunately, Kayla hasn’t dealt with Matthias Clarke before. She’s going nowhere without him knowing about it.

I love Matthias just as much as I loved Wren in The Fixer. These men have horrible childhood pasts and have grown into themselves by staying isolated with only a few friends they know they can trust. While they’re not totally socially inelegant, they’re close with no people skills whatsoever. And this makes getting to know them a lot of fun for the reader, though their heroines have a more frustrating time figuring them out. Matthias has Wren to thank for finding Kayla so he can bring her in for more questioning to satisfy himself about his brother’s death. It doesn’t take long for him to discover she really is innocent of this crime and that someone still wants her dead. Both their lives hang in the balance as their investigation continues to find the killer, all the while learning to trust one another with their secrets, which is difficult for them both.

The chemistry between Matthias and Kayla is wonderfully done. She’s learned not to be a pushover as she’s run for her life for seven years, so she handles him quite well when it’s needed. Their banter is fun and I enjoyed every scene between them. I loved seeing Wren again, especially now that he’s opened up a bit due to his love for Emery. The rapport between Wren, Matthias and Garrett is just as fun, and each of them knows they can rely on the other, no questions asked.

I am so looking forward to the next book in this series. I hope some new characters are introduced so we get more books down the road. I love watching these men realize love is going to be part of their futures, even though it scares them shitless, and also love they pick the right women who give them everything while keeping them in line.

Summary:

Security expert Matthias Clarke hunts down people who don’t want to be found. His latest prey: the sole survivor of a massacre that killed his brother years ago. Kayla Roy claimed she was a victim of the carnage. Then she disappeared. Matthias thinks Kayla may have actually been the killer—and he wants justice.

Kayla Roy never stays in one place too long and never lets a man get too close. But keeping Matthias at arm’s length may be impossible. Dark and enigmatic, Matthias draws Kayla in from the start. She knows nothing about his connection to her dark past, or his thirst for vengeance. She only knows their attraction feels overpowering—and very dangerous.

Matthias’s suspicions about the sensual Kayla clash with his instinct to protect her, especially when he realizes her life is in danger. But Kayla’s not looking for a savior—especially one who seems hell-bent on tempting her down a lethal path.
