Veena’s review of Highlander Redeemed (Guardians Of The Targe, Book 4) by Lauren Wittig
Historical Romance  published by Montlake Romance  12 May 15

This is a beautiful, passionate story set in the Scottish Highlands aflame with the ambition of Edward King of England, the hammer of the Scots, and a young girl on the threshold of womanhood who seeks vengeance against the English for the crimes against her people.  Poor Scotia, all her good intentions lead to disasters that her clan pays for, including with their lives. After the last one, her entire clan shuns her – except for Duncan, who’s adored her and looked out for her since childhood. Can he teach her the control and focus she needs to become the warrior the clan needs to stand against the English?

Duncan, for all that he’s Scotia’s champion, is not happy to be assigned the duty to be her guard and keep her out of trouble, until he channels it into teaching her new skills that will help harness her passionate nature.  He feels he’s making great progress as she embraces all he teaches and surpasses many of the young males in the clan – until she’s  put to the ultimate test.

This story incorporates the mysticism of the Scottish Highlands with the magic necessary to guard and hold the land safe.  The guardian powers are passed through the bloodline, with Scotia’s sister and cousin having complementary powers.  Scotia feels like a third wheel as she observes her sister’s and cousin’s happiness with their protectors and their position in the clan.  She desperately wants to belong and prove her worth. Can Duncan’s lessons teach her that it is not her passion that is misplaced but her methods of achieving what she wants and needs?

As Scotia and Duncan practice their warrior skills and seek to awaken magic within her, they try to stay one step ahead of the English soldiers who seek to capture their ancestral castle and decimate the clan.  This is a sweet story where the outcome is never really in doubt and yet Scotia captures the interest of the reader and holds it solidly through the book.

Grade: B

Summary

Scotia MacAlpin may be only eighteen years old, but she’s no stranger to trouble. Her latest incident—which resulted in a death and forced her clan into battle—has made her an outcast among her exiled people. Scotia is tired of being ignored and overshadowed by her sister, a gifted Guardian of the Targe, and she’s become hell-bent on destroying the army out to capture the ancient Highland relic for their English king.

Duncan of Dunlairig has looked out for Scotia since she started to walk. She was as restless and reckless then as she is now—only the stakes have become higher and more perilous. While the rest of Clan MacAlpin ostracizes her, Duncan secretly helps Scotia become the warrior she yearns to be. But the real test of her skills may come when he needs her help—and her long-forgotten heart
