Veena’s review of Earthbound (Sisters Of The Heart, Book 4) by Christine Feehan
Contemporary Romance published by Jove Books 07 July 15

I really enjoy this series because it appeals to a totally different side of my brain than the usual paranormal stories. Lexi as a character with her elemental connection to the earth and her secret pain reached out to me in earlier books such that I was eagerly awaiting her book.  I am disappointed, however, that this story, which had all the makings of a great one, falls short of my expectations.

Gaveriil Prakenski has been honed into a weapon for the Russian government under the harshest of training regimes. He’s managed to keep an eye on his brothers and help them out behind the scenes where and when he can. With a new threat against his family, he’s come to say goodbye to his brothers, who are settled in Sea Haven, even as he draws their enemies away, willing to sacrifice himself in the bargain. On his way into the protected sanctuary where his brothers and their wives make their home, he’s in a position to rescue Lexi.

Lexi calls out to a portion of his heart and soul that he thought long withered and dead. Before he can stop himself, he’s creating an indelible bond with her. Lexi has her own demons from her horrific past. Can these two deeply damaged people find their salvation together and forge a happily ever after?

Clearly, since this is a love story, that will happen, but their journey will be as unique and interesting as they are. I’m just disappointed with all these lovely bones that the story turns out trite with repetitive dialog. There are some great moments of bonding between the brothers, especially when they go on a hunt and rescue together. The children that Max rescued are coming into their own, and it’s cute to see the little boy becoming a miniature Max, even to the extent of breaking into Lexi’s home to protect her from the predator in her house. There are some wonderful moments between Lexi and Gaveriil as he coaxes her into a meaningful relationship between the two of them.

There are brief glimpses of some of the characters from the original Sea Haven series that get us a quick catch-up, which I always enjoy, because it makes the stories live on beyond the pages of the original book. I am very intrigued by the sister who seems to have a dangerous past and who’s heading to Russia. Which Prakenskii is going to be her nemesis?

Grade: C

Summary:

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Air Bound returns to the mysterious coastal town of Sea Haven where six sisters of the heart are bound by the elements, and one is stalked by an inescapable past…

After escaping from a cult, Lexi found refuge with her sisters on the farm that more than sustained her body—it nurtured her soul as well. But she never forgot the terror she left behind or the always present fear that the cult would find her again, and claim her. Then her nightmare came true.

Lexi was discovered and threatened—only to be suddenly saved by a stranger. He is Gavriil Prakenskii, and he’s awestruck by the woman he’s rescued. She is destined for him. He can feel it in his soul. But how can Lexi find happiness with a man steeped in secrets and shadows, one intimately acquainted with violence, and whose very love could be the death of them?
