Veena’s review of Breaking Danger (Ghost Ops, Book 3) by Lisa Marie Rice
Contemporary Romance published by Avon 15 Jul 14
I thoroughly enjoy the right mix of suspense and the thrilling edge of danger that Ms. Rice dishes up in her stories. I am willing to stretch and bend my imagination as necessary around some of the curves and corners that manifest themselves during the telling of some her stories, but this one really stretches my imagination and credulity such that it made me way too critical about things that I could not wrap my head around to allow me to enjoy the story.
A top-secret experiment to create super soldiers goes very wrong, resulting in an epidemic that originates in the lab but swiftly sweeps out into the streets of the city and pretty soon starts to manifest itself around the country, decimating the population as it fans and sweeps out like an out-of-control fire. I find it a bit unbelievable that while it fans out over the country it manages to stay within the borders of the country.
Sophie Daniels was imprisoned in the same lab when all hell broke lose but had the presence of mind to liberate the antidote while she escaped in the midst of the chaos and is now holed up in her apartment in the middle of San Francisco. Jon Ryan, the last single member of the Ghost Ops team, is dispatched posthaste to rescue Sophie and bring her back to Haven, so the team can start to manufacture the antidote and begin saving the world. I enjoyed the first meeting between the two where uncontrolled passion flared between them and pretty soon they’re sharing deep intimate secrets as they clinically observe the happenings outside Sophie’s windows and confer with their friends and colleagues at Haven.
Unfortunately Jon couldn’t park his chopper on Sophie’s rooftop so had to leave it on the top of the landmark Ghirardelli building, which collapses as they approach it on their escape route, but they manage to elude the swarm-like infected as they make it safely to Fisherman’s Wharf and find a boat. Of course, they’re attached by these creatures who no longer represent humans but manage to make it by their skin teeth and find their way to a perfect hideaway with its own private dock, where they find a vehicle that can take them the rest of the way to Haven.
During this entire escape the two can’t keep their hands or other body parts away from each other as they make their way through dangerous terrain toward safety. The author has one more surprise up her sleeve when safety is just within reach that I will leave you to read for yourself. There are many elements in this story that captured my imagination, especially given some of the more recent movies with a somewhat similar theme. This series also blends in some interesting psychic gifts that the women possess into the overall theme, making it somewhat unique.
