Veena’s review of Forged in Dreams and Magic Book 1 by Kat Bastion
Paranormal Romance published by Amazon Digital Services 22 Sep 13
One beautiful archeologist + one mystery box = one gorgeous highlander in a kilt + one handsome Pict with blue paint. That equation sounded like a total win/win, so I didn’t hesitate to pick this one up to read and review.
Isobel MacInnes promises her dying grandfather that she will open her mind and heart to possibilities and promptly stumbles upon a box with mysterious markings. Before she can do any detailed archeological analysis, the box sucks her up and transports her into thirteenth century Scotland and the arms of Chieftain Iain Brodie.
It doesn’t take long for love to blossom between the two, so they pledge their troth. Examining the strange energy that the box emits, Isobel gets sucked in one more time and transported into the arms of a Pict warrior ready to engage the Romans. Inevitably Isobel falls in love with Vellore. From no men in our century, she now has two men in different time periods. It’s an interesting triangle stretched over time. Our heroine finds a way to keep both her men and use the box as a transporter between them and the different time periods.
I almost felt like I was transported into a King Arthur fantasy full of magic and supernatural elements. As Isobel delves deeper into the mystery surrounding the box, she finds out that there’s a lot more to the box than just a time travel device. I’m also quite intrigued with the possibilities of the next book thanks the hook at the end of this one.
There are times when my imagination is stretched, while there are other moments when the story sags a bit. Overall I enjoyed the story. I understand that this is a debut book for the author, so I can’t wait to see what comes next from her pen as she matures and grows as a writer.
Grade: B
