How I love reading about shapeshifters. Especially in this Children of the Moon series. And this time around, Lucy Monroe has given readers a new take on the werewolf.
Shona is fleeing England to escape the clutches of her stepson, the new baron since his father’s death. He wants her just because he can have her, but he wants her son dead. Eadan is not the old baron’s son, though no one other than Shona and a few others know that, so Percival is out to make sure the boy is no competition for his new title. Finally crossing into Scotland, Shona and her party are intercepted by Sinclair warriors, and she hopes they’ll be allowed to continue on to Balmoral Island where her only relatives reside. What she doesn’t expect is to come face to face with the man she was to marry six years ago. The father of her son.
Seeing Shona again is a shock to Caelis, but seeing the remarkable likeness her son bears to himself is nearly more than he can take. His mate is back in his life, and this time he’s not about to let her go. Caelis is the type of alpha warrior I love. The combination of wolf and man, along with fighting skill, makes him arrogant and confident, which he’s entitled to, but he’s about to learn a huge lesson from someone of the female persuasion. Caelis believes all should be forgotten and they can start their family right now, which will also include Shona’s daughter. That’s another thing I like about him – the children love him, aren’t the least bit afraid, and this huge warrior is as gentle as can be with them. But Shona has got some news for Caelis.
Her heart is still quite damaged from the treatment she received at his hands all those years ago. She doesn’t trust him one iota, and her heart will be protected this time around. But she’s also in for quite a surprise when she begins to learn about Caelis and the Faol, the Fearghall, the Ean, and such impossible tales about mates, shape-changers, and other fantastical things. Seeing is believing, however, when Caelis shifts into his wolf form, and that’s when a lot of things she’d never understood before begin to make more sense. Especially when it comes to her parents, who wanted nothing to do with her when she was pregnant, and her son, who is everything to her. Shona is still determined, though, to make Caelis prove he’s now trustworthy, and little by little she starts to see those tiny changes that allow her to break down those barriers around her heart.
Caelis has changed. He finally saw how the MacLeod alpha has been deceiving their pack/clan for so long, which is how he lost Shona to begin with. Training and honing his craft for years now has put him in a position to right so many wrongs, and with Shona by his side? He’ll be invincible. Getting her to agree to stand with him is the hard part, but when he is pushed to reveal his true nature as a Chrechte shifter, she begins to understand what it is Caelis has to do.
I thoroughly enjoyed both of these characters. Shona is a strong woman, made that way by betrayal, at least how she sees it. She’s endured much and now is determined to live life on her own terms. She just doesn’t expect her feelings for Caelis to be as loud and strong as ever. I like the way she sticks to her guns when making him work for the trust between them. As it is with such alpha heroes, though, he ends up putty her hands, as well as his children’s hands, but he will protect them with his life and love them with all his heart.
I also love the shifting of the wolves, the birds of prey, and even the dragon I didn’t expect. That’s when I realized I somehow missed reading Dragon’s Moon, and I aim to remedy that as soon as I can. There’s got to be some major shifting going on in that book. This is a wonderfully intriguing world Lucy Monroe has created, and I love being there with her characters. I’m hoping there’s more books to come in this series, but I couldn’t find anything on her web site about that. Keeping my fingers crossed!
