Veena’s review of Emily: Sex and Sensibility (The Wilde Sisters, Book 1) by Sandra Marton
Contemporary Romance self published through Amazon Digital Services 28 Apr 13
Poor little rich girl. Emily is overshadowed in a family of overachievers. Not content to rest on the family laurels or money, she moves away to New York, determined to find herself in the big city. She’s willing to try anything, but either her family name or beauty get in the way. Still hopeful, she changes her name and continues to try until one cold and rainy night she’s finally at rock bottom when billionaire Marco Santini comes to her rescue. One good Samaritan act from a man with more money than heart might provide Emily with the opportunity that she needs.
I find Emily’s character quite interesting. She is so determined to succeed on her own merits. She leaves behind all the trappings of her family’s wealth, lying to her siblings about her activities. She’s not too proud to do what she needs in order to succeed and yet the world doesn’t open one single door for her until Marco, in a rare moment of generosity decides to give her a job playing the piano, only to find that she makes a better administrative assistant than piano player.
Marco himself has risen from the slums in Italy to a billionaire entrepreneur. Along the way he had his heart broken by a mercenary bitch who prized money more than his love. Now that he has more money than he can spend, he has the world at his feet and women vying for a night in his bed until he meets Emily. Suddenly he’s not as detached as he’s always been and it seems that she can come between him and his work. Has he actually found a heart?
There is strong chemistry between these two and clearly neither can resist the other, but then Marco discovers that Emily is not the honest, hardworking girl that he thought. Instead she’s one of those famous Wildes from Texas. Okay, so they’re going to have to navigate some diversions.
This is a well-paced romance with the right amount of chemistry and some great dialogue.
Grade: B
Summary:
Emily Wilde has led a privileged life. Now she’s trying to make it on her own in Manhattan.
Marco Santini grew up dirt poor in a Sicilian slum. Now he has everything. He’s gorgeous. He’s rich. He’s powerful. And he has all the beautiful women a man could ask for.
Then, one rainy night, he sees a woman standing alone on a deserted New York street corner. Emily is clearly in need of help, but she’s not foolish enough to step into Marco’s chauffeured Mercedes. It takes a lot of convincing before she lets him take her to her apartment. He swears he’s not going to do anything he shouldn’t and he means it–but she’s in his arms before they can stop themselves.
Still, it’s only a kiss, just one kiss in a moment torn out of time. That’s what they both think.
But Fate has other plans, starting with an unexpected job offer and a business trip to Paris that explodes in a passion so hot it will change everything—everything but the web of lies that traps them both.
