Veena’s review of The Dominant (The Submissive Trilogy, Book 2) by Tara Sue Me
Contemporary Erotic Romance published by NAL 06 Aug 13
I was definitely looking forward to getting a deeper understanding into what lay beneath the tough dominant exterior that Nathaniel showed to the world, but I was blown away with the vulnerable man who emerges in this book. I do have to warn you, however, that while you get intriguing glimpses into his thinking, it constantly feels like deja vu. In fact, there are a couple of times when I actually turned to the title page to make sure that I had not accidentally switched to Book 1 in the series. If you can survive that sense of “I’ve been here before,” the wait will be worth it to see the true Nathaniel West emerge.
For people who are searching for the flavor of relationship that they need and desire, this book has some good insights into getting what you want and need with the right partner. There are no surprises in how the story unfolds because, of course, you’ve read it before. What makes this book worth its price is to read what had upset Nathaniel after the golf game and what ultimately caused the cracks in their relationship and caused it to crash and burn.
We also get much deeper insights into Jackson, Todd, Elaina, and Linda and the tight relationship that they have with Nathaniel. Most of all we see a side of Nathaniel that you could never imagine when he falls apart so completely after Abby leaves him. When you read the genre for the most part, you read all about the relationship between a dominant and his submissive, but what you don’t get to read and understand is what happens when the bond becomes a marriage, how the D’s dynamic can be threaded into a practical, lasting relationship.
My own psyche went through a complete one-eighty as I read this book. At the start I was extremely disappointed because I felt that I was reading The Submissive and not a new book, but you will find it’s worth it if you survive those chapters. And be warned the ending chapters also seem like a repeat of the first book, but clearly we’re poised at a beginning and not at an ending when the book comes to an end, and I, for one, am definitely looking forward to the concluding chapter of the series as their relationship evolves and, I hope, becomes uniquely their own.
Grade: B
Summary:
Because every story has two sides. The Dominant is coming in August from Penguin NAL.
Nathaniel West doesn’t lose control.
As the playboy CEO of West Industries, he governs the boardroom during the day; as a strict dominant with exacting rules, he commands the bedroom at night. He never takes on inexperienced submissives, but when Abigail King’s application comes across his desk, he breaks his own restrictions and decides to test her limits.
Abby’s combination of innocence and willingness is intoxicating, and Nathaniel is soon determined to collar her as his own. As long as she follows his orders and surrenders herself fully to him, no one will get hurt.
But when Nathaniel begins falling for Abby on a deeper level, he realizes that the trust must go both ways—and he has secrets which could bring the foundations of their entire relationship crashing down…
