GRANDMA’S SPICE COOKIES
Delectable baking aromas are an unmistakable sign that Christmas is near. I love to bake year round. I’m always excited to try something new, but at Christmas I get nostalgic and fall back on the old reliable recipes that have become traditions.
A favorite in our family is Grandma Violet’s Cookies, named after my husband’s grandmother who always had a batch to pull from the freezer when we stopped by. On my yellowed index card, in Grandma Violet’s distinctive handwriting, she called them Aunt Myra’s Cookies. I think someday my grandchildren will call them Bama’s Cookies, since it’s a special treat each time I make them for the family. Whatever they’re called, they don’t last long! I always bake a double batch and have been known to take heart-shaped variations to booksignings on Valentine’s Day as a treat for my special readers.
The recipe is included in A Western Winter Wonderland where Marvel whips up a batch with her young guests.
Enjoy!

Yum!! I always love a new recipe to try for the holidays! I have the book, but I am exercising great control and waiting for it to get closer to the holidays to read. It’s 85 degrees here~I’m in WISCONSIN~so once we get past Halloween and the weather is actually below 50, I’ll feel more inclined to read a book with “Winter” in the title! 😉
Hey Cheryl!! I’m always looking for new recipes to try. And I can’t wait to read the winter anthology!! It sounds like a great one!!
It’s really warm in Nebraska, too, Tracy. I do wonder why the Christmas anthology is out in October, but that’s just another one of those things that are out of my control. I guess the marketing department knows what it’s doing.
I guarantee you will love the spice cookies, Buffie!
Cheryl~the weather has just been weird around here lately. It’s supposed to cool down by Wed. and be more normal as far as temps go. I love summer, but by October I guess I’m ready for some fall weather!! LOL It was homecoming at the local high school last Friday. It was 80 degrees during the day and about 60 at game time. I remember wearing my winter coat to homecoming games some years when I was in high school! And it’s always the first weekend in October!!
