I really like westerns. Admittedly, I’ve not read many books in the genre, but I count LaVyrle Spencer’s The Endearment as one of the best romances I read when I first found the genre. For me, the appeal of the western romance is that it involves characters who have to be strong and tough and show what they’re made of. It is, in fact, the dirt that I love when it comes to westerns. It’s such a treat to find a book that has the true flavor, the real feel of cowboys, their lives and surroundings. Cordell Tanner, the hero of this book, walks, talks, and acts just like a man of the west should, as do all the other characters he deals with throughout the story.
Of course, the exception to that is Trixie, an English transplant who has fallen in love with her home in Kansas and resorts to a little deceit to make sure she keeps it, and a few of her relatives who figure significantly in the storyline later in the book. You’d think they’d be like fish out of water, but they actually take to the ranching life quite easily.

I’ve read a couple of reviews (including our own Teddypig) of this book lately that criticize the fact that this story looks into the lives of other McKay family members and that detracts from the story of the hero and heroine. I beg to differ with ya’ll. This is a series about the McKay family and when tragedy strikes a family, it affects the entire family. So having parts of each book about that family is certainly fine by me. The few parts of this book that do delve into the other family members’ lives aren’t that many and aren’t that lengthy at all anyhow.
