Book CoverAsh’s review of Running Scared (The Sentinel Wars Book 3) by Shannon K. Butcher
Paranormal Romance released by Onyx 04 MAY 10

There are still some things that I have trouble with in this series. I enjoyed Running Scared more than I did the previous book, but I am not sure if it’s enough to save this series. It’s like the pieces are there, they just aren’t coming together right.Once again we have a heroine who is reluctant to bond with our hero. It works better for Lexi in this book, she has been raised thinking the Sentinels are monsters out to kill her. I found myself getting annoyed at her comments about them, and her thoughts about them brainwashing their women. I was able to get over it pretty quickly though, since it was all she knew. Thankfully, it also doesn’t drag on. So far Lexi is my favorite heroine, she was likable, and while she has gone through some tough times, it wasn’t constantly thrown in our face. She  wasn’t wallowing in pity or guilt, and while she had her moments, I never got tired of her.

Zach was also an easy guy to like. He is a great match for Lexi, he knows exactly how to handle her. He also wasn’t suffering from any major emotional baggage. He’s not a wimp, but he’s not an overbearing alpha male either.

While I enjoyed reading about Zach and Lexi fall in love, there wasn’t much excitement in Running Scared. The storyline that is progressing with the series seems to be moving slow, to the point that I don’t really care about it. Something finally happens at the end, but it ended up being wasted, or saved til the next book. Speaking of the next book,  the couple in that one seem to be not moving anywhere at all. Their scenes just made me worried about that book. I am interested to see what happens with another Sentinel, Torr, who is paralyzed from the neck down. He fascinates me, and is someone I want to know more about.

I’m still waiting to be blown away by these books, and I guess by now it’s just not going to happen. Maybe I am expecting more because I would read anything by Shannon K. Butcher’s husband and I would love it. I wanted to be wowed by her, and I never was. I haven’t decided if I am going to read the next one, I don’t want to get my hopes up.

Summary:

Lexi Johns has one purpose: to free her best friend from the hands of the Sentinels. And Zach, the Sentinel she has been running from for months, has one goal: to convince her that their destinies are entwined. For the magic that Zach has absorbed could destroy him if he doesn’t find the woman who can channel it for him. And he knows Lexi is the one.

From an early age, Lexi has been taught to fear the Sentinels. And now she is an agent of a group out to destroy them. So when Zach finds her, it is Lexi’s chance to strike at the heart of the Sentinels. But, as Lexi sees Zach’s courage, selflessness, and honor, she begins to doubt her beliefs — and is faced with an unbearable choice.
