Sandy M’s review of The Spy Who Ghosted Me by Jennifer Peel
Contemporary Romance published by Jennifer Peel 13 Sep 24

I’ve seen Jennifer Peel’s name/books quite a bit for a while now. So when this book came along, it intrigued me and I decided to give it a try. I’m happy to say that I will pick up more of her books in the future. I enjoyed the lightheartedness, as well as the seriousness of the spying, of this story. Cash and Sabrina are delightful characters, and they persevere through their tough times.

They first meet in France three years before, enjoying a romantic fling that evolves into love. But then the unexplainable happens – Cash disappears – Sabrina heads home heartbroken. She tries to find out what happened to him, but her efforts are for naught. Then…he just shows up again one day, out of the blue with a story that just doesn’t cut it the more she thinks about it. She’s tried to move on, has done a pretty successful job of it, but her heart still leaps at the sight of the dratted man.

What she doesn’t know is Cash is a spy, has been his entire life when his agency scooped him up because he has no family. What better way to train a person he’s not loved, has no emotions, and a host of other things to keep his life pinned to the job. With the agency after a certain bad guy, who has ended up engaged to Sabrina’s sister, Cash is determined to be part of the mission, never leaving Sabrina’s side so he’s sure she’s safe. Of course, neither of their hearts are safe the closer they get, trying to find stolen loot before anyone absconds further with it.

I love the relationship between Sabrina and her father. Sabrina is most like him, with her sister being more than a bit selfish and self-centered. But because Sabrina loves her, Sabrina hopes the marriage won’t take place and her sis will still love her in the end. I’m very glad the sister does get her comeuppance and learns from it, especially when I had a niggling I saw the story going in another direction. Quite happy that didn’t happen. Another secondary character, Ivy, is brash and too dedicated to the job – you can’t help but dislike her, but in the end she nearly redeems herself.

All in all, a nice second-chance story with all the feels. At the end it sounds as if there might be follow-up stories about them, and I hope that happens. I also look forward to digging into Ms. Peel’s other works.

Grade: B

Summary:

Are you ready to get ghosted?

Three years ago, I fell truly, madly, deeply in love. It was kind of hard not to when Cash Denton, the sexiest man alive, literally ran into me on the streets of Bordeaux, France, and kissed me. Best. Meet. Cute. Ever. That led to the best two months of my life. Or . . . so I thought, until Cash disappeared into thin air. At first, I assumed he was in a coma or had amnesia after a tragic accident, since there’s no way he would have left me. But that was just wishful thinking because, you guessed it, he ghosted me with a capital G.

So, you can imagine my surprise when he suddenly shows back up in my life at my parents’ resort—while I’m there for my sister’s wedding, no less. It’s the last thing I need, seeing as one, I hate drama, and two, I’m pretty sure my sister’s fiancé isn’t who he says he is. There’s a lot of that going around, apparently. Because get this: Cash, or whatever his real name is, claims to be a spy. You heard me right—a spy. If that wasn’t crazy enough, he wants me to pretend to be his girlfriend so he can keep tabs on the supposed diamond smuggler my sister is marrying. I’m not sure who or what to believe. All I know is, this wedding is way more than I bargained for and there is nothing pretend about my feelings for Cash or whoever he is. But can a regular girl and her ghost live happily ever after? Or will the spy turn out to be just another ghost story?
