Sandy M’s review of Mr. Fixer Upper by Lucy Score
Contemporary Romance published by That’s What She Said Publishing 6 Jul 17
A fun romp through a construction reality show, Kings of Construction, starring brother-and-sister duo, Gannon and Cat. Paige is a field producer on the show, and she and Gannon have had their moments of butting heads. But then, much to his amazement, Gannon begins to see a different Paige than ever before, and he’s determined to get closer to discover even more.
I always enjoy a hero-falls-first storyline. Gannon is definitely one of those men who goes after what he wants. But Paige is just as determined to keep their relationship on the work-only level. She rebuffs him at every turn, which only fuels his fire now that he’s acknowledged she has what it takes to hold his interest. So begins the chase, and Gannon has his work cut out for him.
I really like Gannon. He’s a man’s man, and of course the women love him due to seeing him in their living rooms every week. He creates beautiful furniture and shows his heart just as Paige does when the show helps so many families in need of a makeover when nominated by others for unselfish deeds in spite of their own dire straits. Paige is great at her job, standing up for women – especially those in her industry. Those in power at the network pull no punches when it comes to women, and when it seems something is brewing between her and Gannon, they waste no time in exploiting it. Which doesn’t help Gannon, because Paige really digs in to keep things business only.
And that is where I couldn’t quite totally warm up to Paige. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a great character. I like her morals and ideals, but her “business only” attitude just goes on much too long for me. Every time she makes Gannon work that much harder to get something going between them and she backs off, I wanted to wallop her upside the head, especially when she agrees he’s a great guy the more she gets to know him better than ever before. Finally, she succumbs, and the fireworks are almost worth the wait. Well, at least Gannon is worth the wait.
All the secondary characters are fun and enjoyable. Lucy Score is one of my favorites, and while the issue with Paige bugged me a bit, this is still a great story she’s written. I’m thinking she’s just gotten better over time, and that’s why I love her more recent books just a tad better than this one. That won’t keep me from trying any of her older works, however. She’s worth it!
Summary:
He started to work the laces of his boots loose. Toeing them off, he tugged his t-shirt over his head.
“Oh my God. What are you doing?” Paige’s voice barely rose above the spray from the showerhead.
“I’m washing your damn hair.”
It’s a constant battle on set between sexy home renovation reality star grumpy Gannon and his no-nonsense field producer. Paige has zero time for temperamental talent, especially one who acts like being in front of the camera is the last thing he wants.Mr. Sex in a Toolbelt has made it his mission in life to get a rise out of her, but Paige is a master at locking down her temper. They’re on the road together working long hours fixing houses and changing lives. When cracks in her legendary coolness start to show and sparks fly, Gannon is infatuated and the cameras are there to capture it.
But he’s fallen for pretty packages before and Paige won’t be taken seriously if she’s caught sleeping with the star of her show. She also can’t seem to resist those big, rough hands. Those smoldery hazel eyes. The dimples. The toolbelt. That fiercely protective vibe.
Too bad it’s all about to fall apart.
She never should have trusted him.
He never should have let her go.
