Kaitlyn‘s review of Sisters of Sword and Song by Rebecca Ross
Young Adult Fantasy Romance published by HarperTeen 23 Jun 20

This is my new absolute favorite fantasy standalone. I was immediately drawn into the story and loved the two sisters. The plot is fantastic and the writing, as always, is beautiful. This is dual POV between two sisters, one a warrior accused of murder and the other, equally brave, who volunteers to serve part of her sister’s sentence.

This is a standalone in its own world, but it feels reminiscent of the Elements of Cadence duology with the magic system utilizing song. I love finding that little connection. I think this is my second favorite Ross book, behind Divine Rivals. Honestly, it might be tied for first. I really enjoyed reading this.

I will say in the romance department, there is really only one cuddle for warmth and a heated look by page 380, but you know what? Both moments are satisfying as hell for a lover of slow burn. 😂 That being said, be warned, the romance is not in the forefront of this book.

Grade: A

Summary:

When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish—into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.
