Kaitlyn‘s review of Defend the Dawn (Defy the Night, Book 2) by Brigid Kemmerer
Young Adult published by Bloomsbury YA 20 Sep 22

This book was one of my most anticipated fall releases. Unfortunately, it missed the mark for me. I can normally overlook the naivety of YA main female characters, because obviously they’re YA and usually teenagers. Tessa annoyed me so much in this book, though. I could not handle her until the last few chapters. I’m hopeful she’ll undergo a transformation in Book 3, but at the same time Book 3 is a long time to wait for the main character to finally grow.

The plot of this story falls flat for me. Nothing really happens until the last 80ish pages, and then everything happens too fast. The pacing is off and I found myself getting bored throughout the first half. The extra point of view we got in this is nice, though. I did really enjoy that.

I’m not too happy with how things end. I’m not mad at the cliffhanger, it just feels like things go in an unnecessary direction. I would absolutely love to eat my words with the third book, though. I’m hopeful it will rope me back in and make me fall in love with these characters again.

Grade: C-
