Veena’s review of Heartbreaker (Hell’s Belles) by Sarah Maclean
Historical Romance published by Avon 23 Aug 22

Adelaide is the invisible one amongst the Hell’s Belles. Imagine her surprise when she finds that one person has been watching her and seeing her. Of course, he’s the only person she finds immensely fascinating, but clearly, given her background and his, they are fated never to come together. Then a kiss on the bank of the Thames fans the flames and there’s no going back for either of them.

Adelaide is always on her game, operating in the shadows. When she realizes that her hero the Duke of Clayborn actually sees her, she’s thrown off her game – but not for long.  When fate sends them both chasing after his brother and her protégé to Gretna Green, things get complicated.  The Duke finds that he has seriously underestimated Adelaide and her network of women, especially since Adelaide comes to his rescue more times than one can count, despite his blue blood and money, which he’s always thought was a superior advantage.  This road trip from hell is quite fun from a reader perspective.

It doesn’t take long for Henry to figure out Adelaide’s background, which is so far from his that a match between them should be impossible, but our Duke hasn’t heard of that word before. Will he win the girl, despite all the barriers in his way? Pick up this book to find out.

I love Ms. Maclean’s writing style and her way of sweeping her readers into her stories. This series is definitely dear to my heart, given the role the women play. Can’t wait to see the next chapter in this series.

Grade: A

Summary:

A Tempting Thief

Raised among London’s most notorious criminals, a twist of fate landed Adelaide Frampton in the bright ballrooms of Mayfair, where she masquerades as a quiet wallflower—so plain and unassuming that no one realizes she’s the Matchbreaker…using her superior skills as a thief to help unwilling brides avoid the altar, all while hiding her own scandalous past.

A Powerful Duke

Henry Carrington, Duke of Clayborn, has spent a lifetime living in perfection and has no time for the scandals that arise every time Adelaide ends another groom. His own reputation is impeccable—and the last thing he needs is a frustrating, fascinating woman discovering the truth of his past, or the secrets he holds close.

A Perfect Match

When the two find themselves on a breakneck journey across Britain to stop a wedding, the duke has no choice but to follow her across Britain on a trip filled with bad weather, bad luck, and a surprising lack of beds. Adelaide soon realizes that this perfect duke kisses like a proper scoundrel, and is turning out to be a thief in his own right…one who won’t stop until he’s stolen her well-guarded heart.
